Description: The children’s town “nasze miasto - our city” was founded in the summer of 2004 in Görlitz as a holiday offer for children and youngsters from the age of 7 to 14 of the divided city Görlitz/Zgorcelec (Germany/Poland). In “our city” the young participants will adopt the roles of adults and the sense of self-participation. That means, they will decide what happens in their “City”. We will construct a city in a central place of Görlitz, with huts and tents, where the young citizens will live and work.

Type of Work: When the children enter the city, they have to register in “Our City”, go to the labour office and work in a profession. No matter, whether they will work as fire fighters, bakers, policemen or nurses, they will get an impression about the real-world professions. The citizens will also earn money which they can spend in free time activities, services and other products offered by other citizens. Volunteers will be supporting the children in their “professions and services” (theatre, bakery, hospital, pub, beauty-shop etc. )

Study Theme: Communication in bi-national youth workplace as in the example of the children´s town “nasze miasto - our city” Our project aims are to develop a deeper understanding for other people and a new interest in foreign cultures in the young people of Görlitz/Zgorcelec. Description: Our partner, Emmaus Haarzuilens, is situated in the small, beautiful town of Haarzuilens, very close to Utrecht. Emmaus Haarzuilens is a live/work community for would-be homeless people and others who strongly feel related to Emmaus ideology. All the people who are living at the Emmaus work at the second hand store which also includes recycling. Volunteers will not only work, but also live together with the inhabitants of Emmaus Haarzuilens. Living together also means preparing and eating the meals together and do some cleaning and light house work. It also means that volunteers are expected to live by the rules of Emmaus. Following the Emmaus philosophy and considering the background of some of the Emmaus residents, use of alcohol is prohibited during working days.

Type of Work: This project is in cooperation with Emmaus Haarzuilens where the volunteers will live and work together with the residents of Emmaus. The volunteers will help out at the second hand store which includes for example picking up second hand goods, sorting them and placing them in the shop. Free days will be on Sunday and Monday (work week is from Tuesday until Saturday). Together with the residents, the volunteers will organize a summer festival. The volunteers can include their own ideas for the festival, such as their own traditional food or dance.
