Week 10

As is the case with most of our topics, this one is very broad and there are differing perspectives that exist.  The articles that I have included focus more on corporate responsibility but there is no doubt that the "globilization" of the world economy has occurred largely through expansion of the transnational corporation.  More and more, we are asking these companies to do more than just make a profit.  What responsibilities (beyond profit) do these large multinational companies have?

Topics for this week:

The role of the Transnational Corporation in the Development of the World Economy.

Objectives:

1.  To appreciate the global economic impact of the transational corporations.

2.  To consider the social and environmental  responsibilites that may be expected from these companies.

Readings:

Reading # 1: "Clear Conscience - Clear Profit" (HtmlResAnchor Reading_1_Clear_Consciene_Clear_Profit.doc (opens in new window)

Assignment # 1: Deadline for submisstion - Sunday, November 18, 11.55 p.m.

Read both articles.

Write your reaction paper using usual Reaction Paper format. Your reaction paper should be done on Reading # 2 only

Week 11

As is the case with most of the topics that we have covered, there is considerable complexity and numerous opinions that exist about public debt.  Since the early 1980's, and the beginnings of "supply side" economics, the United States has accumulated a huge public debt that has had significant international impact. It has been felt in capital markets as we have financed these annual deficits and has  also dramatically impacted the treade deficit in this country with have moved to a larger and larger negative status.

I have included two articles this week--one focuses on the political implications of reducing our domestic debt and the other looks more at the international impact that has occurred in the past few years.

Topic for this week:

Public debt and economic stabilization.

Objectives:

To understand the international impact of increasing public debt by the devleoped nations.

To understand the political issues that exist in the United States as we deal with our debt level.

Readings:

Reading # 1: Public's Deficit Fix May Stun Politicians.

Reading # 2: I.M.F. Warns That U.S. Debt Is Threatening Global Stability

Assignments:

Read the two articles: HtmlResAnchor Article # 1 (opens in new window) and HtmlResAnchor Article # 2 (opens in new window).

You may do your reaction paper on either article, but I would ask that you read both.  Try to use the BlackBoard response method but you may attach and email if you have difficulty.
