Great Britain

Упр. 1. Прочитайте текст и ответьте на вопросы.

Geographical position of the U.K.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK) occupies most of the territory of the British Isles. It consists of four main parts which are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Their capitals are London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast .

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the state which is sometimes referred to as Great Britain or Britain (after its major isle), England (after its major historic part) or the British Isles.

The UK is an island state: it is composed of some 5,500 islands, large and small. The UK is situated off the west coast of Europe between the Atlantic Ocean on the northwest and the North Sea on the east and is separated from the European continent by the English Channel (or La Manche) and the Strait of Dover (or Pas de Calais).

The whole territory of the British Isles is 244,000 square kilometres.

We will not find high mountains or large plains in Britain. Everything occupies little place. Nature, it seems, has carefully adapted things — mountains, plains, rivers, lakes — to the size of the island itself. A mountain 12,000 feet high would be a wonder there. So would be a plain 400 miles long, a river as wide and deep as the Mississippi.

Too often the visitor who has only a few days to spend sees only Lowland England, and so he cannot see the contrasts between the wild fiords of Scotland, the rocks of North Wales, the smiling orchardland of Kent, and the open moorland of Sutherland. These contrasts are often not far from big cities.

The climate of the British Isles is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

Winters are not so cold as they can be on the continent, but summers are not so warm as they usually are on the other side of the Channel. In other words, Great Britain has a mild climate, but because of the length of the British Isles temperatures differ from district to district.

On the whole the weather changes very often and there are few sunny days. Britain has rain in every month of the year. The rainiest months in Britain are November, January and February. Usually there is little snow in winter.

The population of the United Kingdom is over 57 million people. The population lives mostly in towns and cities and their suburbs. Four out of every five people live in towns. The distribution of the population is rather uneven. Most people prefer to live in England.

The UK is inhabited by the English, the Scots, the Welsh, and the Irish who constitute the British nation. Now there are also many people of all colours and races in the UK. These are mostly former inhabitants of the former British colonies. These people, called 'the coloureds', came to the UK in search of better living standards.

Упр. 2. Прочитайте текст. Закончите предложения в первой колонке подходящими по смыслу из второй колонки.

Who are the British?

The UK is a confused nation when it comes to national identity, especially in relation to major sporting events. Commentators proudly refer to the country's internationally successful sportspeople as 'English' if they come specifically from England. Welsh and Scottish athletes, however, are usually given the general label 'British' without any recognition of their individual homelands. But it's when the countries compete individually, especially against each other, that the idea of a 'united kingdom' becomes completely lost. At football and rugby matches there has been a strong revival of the individual flags, songs and symbols of England. Scotland and Wales and there often isn't a Union Jack to be seen.

Away from the sports pitch, the national saints' days of St David in Wales and St Andrew in Scotland are starting to be marked with large celebrations in the same way that St Patrick' s Day has always been celebrated in Ireland. And the flag of St George can be seen in England on public buildings and churches where the Union Jack used to be. With Scotland and Wales now having their own parliaments, there is even extreme talk of an 'English Independence

Movement', and some people are wondering if the United Kingdom will last into the next century.
