We are in business (the first steps)

Becoming a manager needs much work, knowledge and professionalism. Before getting a position in a firm or any business organization one should choose which field or resource (as it is called in economic science) he would like to work in.

There are some of them. Let’s see what is what. Today we’ll discuss two of them.

MATERIAL RESOURCE is for a specialist who is hardworking, responsible* and reliable*. He must be bold* in making forecasts on business development and of course he must be a good persuader*. Such a specialist is in charge* of material supply, goods displacement, premises*, warehouses* etc.

COMMUNICATION RESOURCE needs a person who likes to work with people. He should be communicative, patient, helpful and careful. A communication resource manager must be a good psychologist. The ability of finding the way out of difficult situations is also of importance. Such a specialist must think of his staff’s* rest, wages* and working conditions. He is also responsible for employment*, hiring* new people and organizing interviews.

UNIT 8

The Results of the First Year

Grammar: the Infinitive.

Инфинитив – это неличная форма глагола (to Vo), которая отвечает на вопросы «Что делать?» или «Что сделать?» и выполняет в предложении разные функции. Инфинитив может быть:

1) подлежащим;

2) обстоятельством цели;

3) частью сказуемого (в сочетании с личной формой глагола);

4) определением;

5) дополнением.

PATTERNS:

To get good knowledge in economics was her dream. (Подлежащее: стоит перед сказуемым was). To get good knowledge in economics young people choose business schools and colleges of economics. (Обстоятельство цели: стоит перед подлежащим young people). Money to be earned will be used for starting business. (Определение: отвечает на вопрос «Какие?»).

Получить хорошее знание по экономике было ее мечтой. Чтобы получить хорошее знание по экономике, молодежь выбирает бизнес-школы и экономические колледжи. Деньги, которые будут заработаны, будут использованы для организации бизнеса.

Exercise 1. Translate the sentences and define the function of the underlined infinitives:

1. To pay taxes is the obligation of each citizen.

2. To save money for education wasn’t easy for her because her wage wasn’t high.

3. To get some additional information Jane and Dolores started to attend seminars.

4. The interview to be taken made her nervous.

5. To write a thorough paper she had to compare tax systems of different countries.

THE RESULTS OF THE FIRST YEAR

So, the first year at the college was over. It was full of pleasant and sometimes unpleasant events. To remember every day of their studies Dolores and Jane put down all the events they thought to be important into their diaries. They decided to exchange them to see which of the events impressed each of them. Jane devoted many pages to the description of Mr. Brown’s seminars and their importance for improving her knowledge in economics. Dolores wrote about her insight of England, English education, her new friends and of course initial successes in her first work. Her results were appreciated and she was even awarded the title of the “Best pen”* in advertising business.

To pass their annual examinations with the top degree* the two friends worked much. Their hard working resulted in great success. They both were named the best students of the year. To get such a title was very pleasant. But more important for them were the skills they had got in economics. They made their first steps in business, mastered accounting operations and tried to apply their theoretical knowledge to practice. They got to know* how banking business was organized, how to get profit and avoid economic risks. They understood the role and necessity of taxation and importance of insurance. Of course, it’s only the firs “chapter” of their professional going up* but still there is the chance to be pleased and satisfied with what had been done.
