It was the fifteenth of January, about nine o’clock in the morning. I made my bed¹, then I went to the window to put in order² some picture books and the dolls` house.

Georgiana was sitting on a chair and doing her hair³ at the looking-glass. She saw that I was touching her toys (the little chairs, the plates and the cups belonged to her); she stopped me, and said, “Don’t touch my toys!”

I had nothing to do⁴ and so I looked trough the window and saw a carriage, which was coming to the house. It stopped in front of the house. The doorbell rang loudly. This did not interest me, and so I looked at a little hungry bird, which sat on a tree near the window. I wanted to open the window, and to put some bread on the windowsill for the little bird when Bessie ran into the room.

“Miss Jane!” she cried. “What are you doing there? Have you washed your face and hands this morning?”

“No, Bessie, not yet. I have just made my bed.”
