Mass Media in Britain

Britain’s first newspaper appeared over 300 years ago. Now, as then, newspapers in Britain receive no government subsidy. Nevertheless there are about 130 daily and Sunday papers, 1,800 weekly papers, and over 7,000 periodical publications. Advertising has always been an important source of income. Today, income from advertising in newspapers is as essential as income from sales.

The national newspapers fall into two broad categories: «popular» and «quality» press. All the popular papers are «tabloid» in format. The tabloids are mass entertainment. The tabloids’ news content is minimal and their emphasis is on gossip, emotion and scandal. Quality newspapers include news, political and economic analysis and social and cultural problems. There are over 900 free newspapers financed by advertising.

In 1936 the government established the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to provide a public service in radio. Its five radio stations provide 1) non-stop pop music; 2) light entertainment; 3) minority interests; 4) news; 5) sport and education. The BBC additionally runs 37 local radio stations, providing material of local interest.

Television is the single most popular form of entertainment in Britain. In the late 1980s the average adult spent twenty five hours in front of TV set each week. The strength of British television lies in its high quality. Many involved in television, including foreigners living in Britain, claim that British television is the best in the world.
