Phrasal Verbs and Word Combinations

to get acquainted (with smb) – познайомитися з ким-небудь, e.g. I’ll leave you two alone for a while so that you can get better acquainted. I got acquainted with him, but only on a professional basis.

to make friends (with smb) (See Appendix 2) – подружитися з ким-небудь, e.g. Jenny has always found it easy to make friends at school. Have you made friends with your neighbours yet?

from time to time – час від часу, іноді, зрідка, e.g. I still see her from time to time.

to congratulate on – вітати, поздоровляти з, e.g. She congratulated me warmly on my exam results.

to share a room – поділяти кімнату, разом жити у кімнаті, e.g. When I was a fresher I shared a room with him.

to get on – 1) to get on (well) with smb – мати (дружні, добрі) стосунки з ким-небудь, e.g. How does Gina get on with her colleagues? They get on pretty well. 2) робити успіхи, просуватися уперед, e.g. How are you getting on?

up to one’s neck – по горло, по вуха, e.g. I’ve been up to my neck in paperwork all week.

lifetime dream – мрія всього життя, e.g. My lifetime dream is to travel around the world.

to make progress (See Appendix 2) – робити успіхи, добре вчитися, e.g. Nick has made good progress with his studies this year.

to work at – працювати над чим-небудь, e.g. Peter’s English isn’t very good, but he works at it.

to wind up – закінчувати, припиняти, e.g. It’s time to wind things up – I have a plane to catch.

to keep in touch (with smb) – підтримувати зв'язок (з ким-небудь), e.g. Our neighbours are moving away but I hope that we’ll still keep in touch with each other.

to drop smb a line/a few lines (informal) – черкнути кому-небудь пару рядків, e.g. Drop me a line and let me know how you’re getting on.

would rather/sooner do smth – краще, швидше б зробити (переважніше, охочіше), e.g. I’d rather go by car.
Remember: would + rather/sooner + інфінітив без частки to використовується для віддання переваги, вираження бажанішої дії, e.g. I’d rather be happy than rich. I’d rather not watch TV.
Не плутати з «had better do smth»!
Had + better + інфінітив без частки to використовується для поради, рекомендації стосовно майбутньої дії у певному випадку; передає також загрозу, застереження чи невідкладність, e.g. I’d better stop smoking. You’d better see a doctor. You’d better not tell him a lie.
