IV. Fill in the sentences with the words or their derivatives from the previous exercises.

VI. The author creates emphasis in the story. It is achieved by means of an auxiliary verb used where it is not strictly necessary and word order, i.e. an adverbial phrase is put at the beginning of the sentence. Look at the examples from the story. What does the author make use of the emphatic constructions for? Discuss each example given and all the other cases of the emphatic constructions you can find in the text. Change the following sentences from the story so as to make them emphatic. What other means of creating emphasis do you know?

Example: It’s all right for you to say that, but I do know it.

On this side there was no shade and no trees.

  1. The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the build­ing.
