10.1 Перечень лекционных занятий

Тема 1. Введение.

Early English literature. Celtic myths. Celtic sagas.

Тема 2. Английская средневековая литература (V – XV века).

The ideas of the Middle Ages and their reflection in English literature. The peculiarities of English medieval literature. English epic poem Beowulf.

Тема 3. Английская литература эпохи Возрождения (XVI век).

The peculiarities of the English Renaissance and its influence on English literature of the period. Humanism as the peculiarity of the period. Thomas More – the greatest representative of the English Renaissance. Thomas More’s Utopia – the first utopia novel. Sir Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, and Christopher Marlowe. The creation of the English sonnet and the ‘Spenserian stanza’.

Civil War and its influence on English literature of the period. Puritans and their attitude to literature. Ben Jonson, John Donne, John Bunyan, and Andrew Marvell. The Restoration drama: Theatres and actors during and before the Restoration.

Тема 5. Английская литература эпохи Просвещения (XVIII век).

The ideas of the Enlightenment. Sentimentalism and Realism. The ideas of Henry Fielding, Samuel Richardson, Richard Sheridan, Laurence Sterne, Alexander Pope and Thomas Gray.

Тема 6. Английская литература XIX века.

The ideas of Romanticism. William Blake as the first British romantic poet. The role of the “Lake School” in British Romanticism. The revolutionary romantic Percy Bysshe Shelley and his poetry. John Keats and his poetry. The revolutionary romantic George Gordon Noel, Lord Byron. Sir Walter Scott and the creation of the historical novel genre in British literature.

Realism in English Literature. Charles Dickens, his humour and optimism. William Makepeace Thackeray’s satire. Snobs and snobbery. Lewis Carroll’s “realism”. Robert Louis Stevenson and his books. The poetry of Robert Browning and Christina Rossetti.

W.W. Jacobs, Hector Hugh Munro (Saki), and Jerome K. Jerome. The peculiarities of Rudyard Kipling’s books. John Galsworthy and his idea of “Forsytism”. The development of the detective genre in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. Arthur Conan Doyle’s historical books. Bernard Shaw and his social drama.

The influence of science and technology development on the 20^th century British literature. Herbert Wells and his role in the creation of English science-fiction genre. Adeline Virginia Woolf and her unique input in the 20^th century British literature. William Somerset Maugham and his books. The poetry of Thomas Sterns Eliot, Dylan Marlais Thomas, and Wystan Hugh Auden. Alan Alexander Milne and his books for children. George Orwell’s antiutopia.

The evolution of Archibald Joseph Cronin’s novel. Graham Greene and his “Greenland”. The philosophy of existentialism and its reflection in Iris Murdoch’s books. The group of “angry young men” (Kingsley Amis, John Wain, John Osborne, and Allan Sillitoe) and their role in British literature. Roald Dahl’s “sting-in-the-tail” short stories.

Тема 1.Введение.

Early English literature. British tales “Cap of Rushes” “Catskin”, “Jack and the Beenstalk”, “Tom Tit Tot”, “Lazy Jack”, “The Fish and the Ring”, “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Cinderella”, “The Adventures of Jack the Giant Killer”, “Sleeping Beauty”, their linguistic and cultural peculiarities.

Medieval knights novels. King Arthur novels. English and Scottish ballads. Robin Hood ballads and their optimism. Geoffrey Chaucer. Canterbury Tales as the medieval masterpiece.

William Shakespeare: His biography, secrets of his life and art, Romeo and Juliet; Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; The Winter’s Tale; The Taming of the Shrew and sonnets.

Тема 4. Английская литература XVII века.

John Milton: His sonnets, Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained.

Тема 5. Английская литература эпохи Просвещения (XVIII век).

Daniel Defoe as the father of the realistic novel of the period. His novel Robinson Crusoe. Jonathan Swift – the greatest satirist of the 18^th century. His novel Gulliver’s Travels. Robert Burns – the national bard of Scotland.

Тема 6. Английская литература XIX века.

Ann, Emily and Charlotte Bronte and their literary works. Jane Austen – the hottest Hollywood writer. The social and the fatal in the novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. Oscar Wilde and his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Agatha Cristie – the queen of the detective genre. David Herbert Lawrence and his books.

Bernard Shaw: Mrs. Warren’s Profession, Pygmalion. John Galsworthy: The Forsyte Saga. John Tolkien and his novel The Lord of the Rings. William Golding and his novel Lord of the Flies.

Graham Greene: The Quiet American.“Angry young men” and their literary works. Contemporary British literature: Free seminar.
