Moving Media from Mac to Windows

If you have to move media from one platform to another, take extra care to make sure that your filenames are compatible with the naming conventions for both the Mac and Windows operating systems.

Sorting Media After Ingest

Once you’ve got all your footage ingested into your editing application, you can organize it within the application. You can move files into different bins or folders so that it’s organized in a way that’s more intuitive to the way you want to work. The files on your hard drive won’t be affected so you can rearrange and reorganize however you desire. You can also duplicate media so that you have, for example, an establishing shot of the Taj Mahal in a bin with all the other establishing shots in your movie and also in another bin with the rest of the scenes shot in the Taj Mahal.

It’s a good idea to create a separate bin (or folder) for each set of dailies in your project. That way, if you want a reminder of what was shot on a particular day, you can simply open that day’s source bin and see a list of all the shots on the tape. Figure 12.7 shows aan Adobe Premiere Pro bin that displays all of the information that was logged with each shot. As you can see, there’s a lot of information there; much of this information was added automatically by Final Cut Pro.
