In 1912 16 countries agreed to form the IAAF to govern men’s athletics. During the 1920’s long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi of Finland made athletics internationally popular. Javelin throw.

1. The javelin throw is a track-and-field athletics throwing event where the object to be thrown is the javelin, a spear approximately 2.5 meters in length. Javelin is an event of both the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. The size, shape, minimum weight, and center of gravity of the javelin are defined by IAAF rules. In international competition, men throw a javelin between 2.6 and 2.7 meters in length and (at least) 800 grams in weight, and women throw a javelin between 2.2 and 2.3 meters in length and (at least) 600 grams in weight. The javelin is equipped with a grip, approximately 150 mm wide. Unlike the other throwing events (shot-put, discus, and hammer) the technique used to throw the javelin is dictated by IAAF rules and "non-orthodox"1 techniques are not permitted. The athlete is prohibited from turning completely around so that his back faces the direction of throw. In practice this prevents athletes from attempting to spin and hurl the javelin sidearm in the style of a discus throw. Instead of being confined to a circle javelin throwers are provided with a runway 4 meters wide and at least 30 meters in length, ending in a curved arc from which their throw will be measured.

2. The javelin throw has been a part of the Summer Olympics since 1906. Although the javelin is currently used only for sport it has a long history of use for hunting and warfare. There are, for instance, numerous references to the javelin in ancient Hellenic civilization, that practised a form of javelin throwing at the ancient Olympics. The javelin throw has a particularly strong tradition in the Nordic nations of Europe. Of the 66 Olympic medals that have been awarded in the event 30 have gone to competitors from Norway, Sweden, or Finland. Finland is the only nation to have swept the medals twice, in 1920 and 1932.

Swimming

1. Ancient people may have learnt to swim by immitating the way dogs and other animals moved through water. The dog-paddle was the first stroke to be used. Swimming became a popular form of exercise and recreation in many ancient lands, including Egypt, Greece and Rome. But competitive swimming began its full growing in the early 19th century. Captain Webb became the first person to swim across the English Channel. At that time many swimmers use the breast stroke. A faster stroke, the Australian crawl, was developed in the late 1800’s. Johnny Weissmuller, an American swimmer, changed this stroke slightly. His version now called the front crawl, is the fastest, most widely used stroke.

2. The International Federation of Swimming (FINA) was created in 1908, at the time of first London Olympics. The founding of this important body came about by accident. This initiative came from a former hounarary secretary of the Amateur Swimming Association Mr. Hearn and in 1908, its president. Realizing that so many representatives of various countries were in London for the Olympics, Hearn called a meeting to discuss mutual problems. This was held at the Manchester Hotel on 14 July, 1908. By its, a world federation had been founded.
