Good planning is very important in business. The most important thing in planning is to know exactly what you want to achieve then define it, set the deadline, collect information about it and identify the tasks that are necessary to achieve that goal.

Recently we decided to open a new sales office in New York. First I arranged a meeting with the finance department to discuss the project. We prepared a budget with details of the various costs involved. Then we collected information about possible locations for the new office. We considered 2 options – one in Greenwich Village and the other near Central Park.

After doing some more research, I wrote a report for the board of directors. Unfortunately plans sometimes go wrong, because there are some things which are clearly outside our control. So what shall we do if this happens?

It is important when things change and sometimes not for the better, to step back, reassess the situation and redefine your goal. It might even mean changing your end goal. But you should always know exactly what you want to achieve. It is the most important thing.
