Clothes are an important part of our looking. Some people pay too much attention to their clothes. Erick is eighteen. He eagerly follows every new fashion that appears.

He doesn‘t care very much about anything except designer clothes. He always knows what is out of fashion and what is in fashion, and spends most of his money on dressing up in brightly colored expensive clothes and accessories. He is very proud of them and is always well-dressed. He thinks he has very good taste in clothes, but his sister thinks he looks awful. But every man is dressed to his taste. There is no arguing about tastes. Do you agree with this statement?

So „twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter.

(batter n a mixture of flour, eggs, and milk, beaten together and used in cooking)

20. What do you know about buttons? Why do men and women button their clothes differently?

21.Do you know any idioms with “button”?

e.g. button your lip

“Renee talked about her vacation so much that we finally told her to button her lip”.

Meaning: to stop talking; be quiet

Origin: It‘s easy to picture where this 20th-century American expression came from. Imagine buttons on people‘s lips. Someone who wanted you to stay quiet, keep a secret, and not say a word would tell you to button your lip. Today some people also use the expressions ―button it up‖, ―zipper your mouth‖, and ―put a cork on it.‖

Elizabeth and David Emanuel: couturiers

235

They were twenty-eight when it happened – the chance that every dress designer dreams of. The Princess of Wales, still «Lady Diana», asked them to make her wedding dress. David and Elizabeth Emanuel were famous.

Born in ordinary families, the Emanuels had to work hard to get to the top. Davis, son of a Welsh worker, learned to fight and win in a family of nine brothers and one sister. He met Elizabeth, daughter of an English mother and American father, at Harrow College of Art. The two young students liked each other at once, and they liked each other‘s work. They started to work together, and they liked the work they did together. Of course, they fell in love.

The next step for the young married couple was the Royal College of Art. The fashion show at the end of the course is a big chance for young designers. The Emanuels were lucky. Bianca Jagger, ex-wife of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, saw their work and they made a dress for her. When she wore it in New York, the newspaper said it was made by Dior.

It was not long before the news went round. The Emanuels were becoming wellknown.

It wasn‘t always easy. People took their designs home to study, and then copied more cheaply. Even the richest people sometimes didn‘t pay them. The Emanuels had to learn from their mistakes. But then came the royal wedding. For weeks they worked in secret, hiding their designs from the cameras of the many newspaper men.

David and Elizabeth make wonderful clothes, but jeans and T-shirts are good enough for them to wear. And after their six or seven day working week, there‘s no time to spend at parties. It‘s more fun to stay at home and play with Oliver and Eloise, their two young children. What makes this ordinary young couple so special? 1. Answer the questions

What was the fashion when you were in school?

Did you like your school uniform?

What color was your uniform?

Did you wear your uniform to the school graduation ceremony?

2.Look at the following list of fashionable items. Which things are not suitable for wearing to school?

bikini tops / body piercing / make up /jewellery / fur coats / spray coloured hair

3. Discuss as a class

What are your university rules?

Is there a dress code?

Explain the rules:

We can wear_____.

We cannot come to classes in_____.

Reading: school uniforms

4. Read and find out

239

Which speaker is proud of the school uniform?

Which item of clothing causes the most problems?

Each term teachers send some pupils home from school. Sometimes the reason is fashion. Punk hair, rings in noses and high heels can cause problems. Some schools send pupils home if their school uniform is too short. Pupils like to change the style of their trousers, write on their ties or adapt their uniform jacket to suit the latest fashion. And what do students say?

Sandy: There is no need for administrators and teachers to be 'clothes police' if we all wear uniforms. It also encourages a sense of community and helps schools to identify those who do not belong. Uniforms stop comparisons between rich or poorer students. The most important is that they make choosing your clothes in the morning easier.

Sarah: I hate wearing our school skirt. In winter we are freezing and the boys are nice and warm in their trousers! It isn‘t fair. I do not agree that uniforms are good for discipline and give a serious tone to the school. They only give us an ugly look. Also uniforms do not allow teenagers to express their individual personalities. We all look the same!

Michael: Three years ago the parents voted for a uniform. It has saved us all loads of money. Everyone looks smart in their school sweatshirt. I think it‘s cool. There is no competition about clothes for school. We all look the same!

Tina: My classmate was sent home in May because the teacher said her skirt was too short. I would like to wear long skirts when it is hot but that isn‘t possible either. The skirts have to be knee length. It‘s like being in prison. I don‘t think it makes any difference to our school work or exam results!

5.Who is for and who is against? Write F or A near the names. Find lines in the text to support your opinion.

Sandy ____

Sarah ____

Michael ____

Tina ____
