Reading
5. Read the text and underline the advantages and disadvantages of hitchhiking.
In pairs talk on how safer or dangerous hitchhiking in your country is.
Hitchhiking is one of the cheapest ways of traveling. By tradition, hitchhiking is defined as soliciting a ride by standing at the edge of a road, facing traffic, with one's thumb extended/upwards. You can meet a lot of people and make lots of friends. You can also become very frustrated, or encounter danger on the way; today's drivers are more fearful of picking up hitchhikers than in the past. But it's also a great feeling to get a ride after you've been waiting for a long time. People who do pick up
209
hitchhikers tend to be very friendly. However, hitchhikers also risk being picked up by someone who is an unsafe driver or even personally dangerous. Hitchhiking in itself is rarely illegal, but there are often rules about where you can do it (e.g. not on highways, near intersections, at bus stops), so read up on the rules first to avoid getting booked for "trespassing" or "obstructing traffic".
Listen to the article “Hitchhiking in Japan.
6. Read the statements about hitchhiking in Japan. Tick (√) if it is true, cross (X) if it is false.
1.Summer and winter are the best times of the year for hitchhiking in Japan
2.Many of the longest rides are available early in the morning.
3.If the weather is bad, it is necessary to give up hitchhiking for the day.
4.As a hitchhiker you must get up at 9 o‘clock in the morning.
5.Hitching in the summer risks sunburn.
Hitchhiking in Japan is the key to true budget travel in the country and the way to escape the country's ruinously expensive domestic transport costs.
Like other tourism in Japan, the best times of year are spring and fall, when it's not too hot and not too cold. Hitching in the summer risks sunburn and dehydration, while winter is simply too cold. On vacation you can get up at 6 a.m., as a hitchhiker you must get an early start. Many of the longest rides are available early in the morning, and your hitchhiking day will come to an end when the sun goes down.
If the weather is bad, it is necessary to give up hitchhiking for the day and plan to do something else. A sodden figure standing forlornly in the rain with his thumb out is not a pitiful figure in Japan, he's a dangerous lunatic. Again, just go inside and they will offer you drinks and food.
