A Holiday to Remember

One night I was driving along the road when I noticed that there were no more signposts. Suddenly , I realized that we were lost. There were no lights anywhere, so I stopped the camper van for the night.

After a while, a boat arrived and pulled us back to the beach. A couple of hours later we were at home, safe and sound! From then on, we decided to stay in a hotel for our holidays.

I was sick and tired of going to the same place every year, so last year my family and I decided to travel around Britain for two weeks in a camper van.

The next day I woke up and the camper van was moving by itself. We were floating on the sea! I called for help immediately. Meanwhile, my wife was trying to stop water from coming into the camper van.

Gulliver’s Travels

On 5th November, which was the beginning of summer in those parts, the seamen suddenly saw a rock close to the ship; but the wind was so strong that we were pushed onto it. Six of the crew, including myself, let down the boat into the sea and tried to get away from the ship and the rock. _1_______________ In about half an hour the boat was overturned by a sudden strong wind from the north. What happened to the men in the boat, as well as those who escaped on the rock, or were left in the ship, I cannot say; but I imagine they were all lost.

2_____________ I often let my legs drop, and could not feel the bottom; but when I was able to struggle no more, I found myself in shallow waters; and by this time the storm was much calmer. I walked for nearly a mile before I got to the shore, which I guessed was at about eight o‘clock in the evening. I then walked on for another half a

215

mile, but could not find any sign of houses or people. I was extremely tired, and with the heat of the weather I needed to sleep.

_________________3_ I slept better than I remembered ever having done in my life, and when I awoke, It was just daylight. I tried to get up, but wasn‘t able to , as I was laid on my back, I found my arms and legs were strongly fastened on each side to the ground; and my hair, which was long and thick, tied down in the same way. I could only look upwards; the sun began to grow hot, and the light hurt my eyes.____________4_ .In a little time I felt something alive moving on my leg, which, moving gently forward over my chest, came almost up to my chin; looking downwards as much I could. Reading: My style

5. Put the words in order to make questions.

you what wear How choose do to?

your style personal do describe How you? are favourite Who designers your and why?

Read the text about Dinara answering the questions above paying attention to the expressions with dress and wear.

Everyday, I try to dress for the occasion. When I visit friends, I generally dress casually. I wear jeans, and I might wear a t-shirt. In the case of a date, I usually wear a nice dress, but nothing too formal. In the past, I made it a habit to dress up for work because it was important to give a good impression, but more people are dressing down in the workplace, and this is more usual now. When I exercise, I generally wear some shorts and a shirt, and I put on comfortable shoes.

How would you describe your personal style? That is such a difficult question for me to answer, because I feel that my style is still developing. There are things that I bought less than a year ago that I no longer wear, and there are other things

219

I‘ve had for years but still love. Generally I think I‘m quite girly. I love my skirts, dresses and overall attractiveness.

My favourite designers? These change every season – there are designers that I will love one season and hate the next! Usually I love labels like Moschino and Zara – these brands are girly, fun and don‘t take themselves too seriously. I always look forward to their shows and dream about buying something from their collections! Overall, I think new fashions are replacing traditional ones, but I also think we should also try to preserve typical traditional clothing. It's a part of our culture and tradition.

6.What do the expressions below mean? Read the text again and try to understand the meaning of each expression.

to dress for the occasion to dress casually

to dress up for work

to give a good impression

to dress down in the workplace personal style

to be quite girly overall attractiveness

to look forward to shows

to replace traditional fashion

to preserve typical traditional clothing

Use the expressions in sentences to describe your style.

From the text write out some sentences that are true about you. Read your sentences as a class and compare.

e.g. When I visit friends, I generally dress casually.

Speaking

7. Work in pairs and read these statements.

I spend a lot of time to get dressed in the morning.

I love buying new clothes.

I really don't think much about what I wear.

I hate having the same clothes as my friends.

It's important for me to be fashionable.

How much do you agree or disagree with it?
