MOSCOW
Moscow, the capital of Russia, is both the most important political centre of the country and one of the world’s greatest centres of sciences, culture and art.
No wonder a lot of tourists, businessmen and people of all walks of life come to see Moscow, its famous buildings, theatres, rich museums and art galleries. The heart of Moscow was and has remained the Kremlin, a wonderful example of Russian architecture. Its cathedrals and palaces are remarkable museums which help foreign tourists get to know the history of the Russian people. In 1961 a new palace appeared within the Kremlin walls, the Palace of Congresses, a modern building of steel and glass.
Red Square is part of the Kremlin. Visitors come here to see the Lenin Mausoleum, the monument to Minin and Pozharsky and the famous St. Basil Cathedral, a masterpiece of old Russian architecture.
But historical places are not the only attraction for tourists. They enjoy visiting new districts as well. A new district has been built in Krylatskoe. It is as large as a whole town. The streets are broad and straight. The blocks of flats are eight or twelve storeyed buildings. There are all kinds of shops on the ground floor of almost every house. Several new cinemas have been built for the inhabitants of the district.
The new building of Moscow University is situated on the Vorobyev Hills too. It attracts a lot of visitors. In fine weather they can enjoy a beautiful view of the city that opens out from the Vorobyev Hills.
