Wood Products

1. Wood products are known for their natural beauty, but when selecting a type of wood for flooring, millwork or furniture, it is important to consider the level of durability by understanding the difference between wood types. Each type and species of wood has an individual cellular structure that creates unique physical properties that determine suitability for different uses. For example, the hardness of woods varies widely, so certain hardwood species are not recommended for flooring because they are not hard enough to withstand heavy wear and tear.

2. Hardwoods are deciduous trees that have broad leaves, produce a fruit or nut and generally go dormant in winter. In north forests grow hundreds of varieties that thrive in temperate climates, including oak, ash, cherry, maple and poplar species. Each species can be crafted into durable, long-lasting furniture, cabinetry, flooring and millwork, and each offers unique markings with variation in grain pattern, texture and color.

3. Widely available softwood trees include cedar, fir, hemlock, pine, redwood and spruce. In a home, softwoods primarily are used as structural material, with limited decorative applications.

Nacre

1. The shining, playful, and reflected light of nacre, also known as Mother of pearl, has attracted the attention of human beings since time immemorial. Nacre is a composite of organic and partly inorganic material produced by some mollusks as an inner layer of their shells. Nacre also makes up the outer coating of pearls. It is very strong, resilient, and iridescent substance.

2. Nacre is usually used to decorate art objects: furniture, watches, knives, guns, jewelry, etc. There are five types of nacre. The most commonly used type is White Mother of Pearl from pearl-bearing oysters. It has very high reflective properties. Others ones are: Iridescent Mother of Pearl with domination of pink and colors; Chip Mother of Pearl which is multicolored one; Stone Mother of Pearl is white with low reflective power; Mat Mother of Pearl of dull grey color.

3. Nacre is composed of tiny calcium carbonate plates arranged in continuous parallel lamina. These layers are separated by sheets of organic matrix composed of elastic biopolymers. This mixture of brittle plates and thin layers of elastic biopolymers makes the material strong and resilient. The toughness and resilience of nacre make it almost equivalent to that of silicon.
