Text b. Alferov Zhores Ivanovich

1. Zhores Alferov, an outstanding Russian scientist, was born in Belarus, on March 15, 1930 in Vitebsk. In 1952 he graduated from the Department of Electronics of Electrotechnical Institute in Leningrad. Alferov took a great interest in Physics while still at the institute. He worked at the Ioffe Physics and Technics Institute as an engineer, as researcher, as a head of the department. Since 1987 Alferov has been the Director of the Institute.

2. In 1961 he defended his doctoral dissertation and became a Doctor of Physics and Mathematics. In 1972 he became a Corresponding Member and in 1979 a Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Alferov is the author of the fundamental works on Physics of semiconductors (полупроводники) and semiconductor and quantum electronics, the founder of semiconductor heterostructures. He is the author of 50 inventions, of three monographies and more than 350 scientific articles in national and international magazines.

3. From 1989 he has been the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the President of its St. Petersburg Scientific Centre. In 19995 Alferov was elected a member of the State Duma. For his research Professor Zh. I. Alferov was awarded a number of national and international prizes. In 2000 Zhores Alferov was awarded a Nobel Prize for his great contribution to Physics. Today there are few names in the history of Physics that can be placed next to him.
