Tanker: We`ve completed your bunkering/You have got 200 cu .m. of diesel oil, that is 180 tons. Tell us when you`re ready to cast off the oil hose and don`t forget to out a blank flange on it to prevent fuel leakage into the water.

Trawler: We`re ready to ray out the hose. It has a blank flange, don`t you worry.

Tanker: O.K. Pay out the hose as we haul it in. Don`t slacken it too much!

Trawler: The hose and the messenger line are paid out overboard.

Tanker: Put your engine into operation/When the towing hawser is slackened, cast it off together with the messenger line over the ship`s side and stop the engine.

Trawler: The towing hawser and the messenger line are paid out overboard. The engine is stopped.

Текст1.THE DIESEL ENGINE IS MOST EFFCIENT PRIME MOVER

One of the fields of applications of Diesel engines is in motor-ships. Ships which go on long voyages rarely calling at a port for refueling(1) must carry a large store of fuel, which naturally takes up a great deal of room that could otherwise be used for cargo. Therefore , the most efficient prime mover wins because less fuel is needed. Diesel engines also take up less room than the boilers and turbines and condensers (2) of a steam power plant for ships. But a complete steam plant is cheaper than equivalent Diesel engines and therefore, before deciding, one must compare the higher first cost of Diesel engines with their reduced fuel cost and see if the saving in the long run (3) is big enough.

The first passenger ship built in Great Britain with an alternating-current supply for all auxiliary services was launched on the Tyne. The “Bergensfjord”, flagship on the Norske-America Line, represents a development in a branch of marine electrical engineering which has so variable-speed drivers for nearly all purposes, and so profit to the maximum extent and its starting equipment.

The 5BBT non-contact transformers are intended for use in electromechanical resolves and systems and also as the primary transmitter in digital converters.

The nominal frequency is 400 Hz, operating frequency range-400-4000 Hz

Electrical installation

The ship’s network is designed for alternating current at a maximum voltage of 380 and a frequency of between 50 and 40 cicles-for energyzing this circuit, two high-tension supplies are available, and one low-tension as follows:

a.Directly from the main bus-bars;

b.From the 1,800 generating set directly;

c. From the emergency Diesel-generating sets.

The high-tension supply is stepped down to a lower voltage by means of transformers, of which two of 700 KW, one of 600 KW and one of 100 KW capasity are provided. They are regulating transformers, and are used in the heating and lighting circuits to prevent flickering. Depending on the speed of the generators, they frequency can vary between 50 and 40 cycles, and they voltage between 380 and 220.
