Part V. Speaking

1. On the Spot!

You are the owner-publisher of a small magazine. You depend on money from advertising to stay in business. There have been months where you made almost no profit at all.

One day you receive a phone call from a potential new advertiser who wants to take out an expensive full-page ad about his political group. You need the money from the ad, but you hesitate to accept it for one reason: it comes from a hate group whose members advocate violence against people who don't agree with them.

Question: What would you do if you were the owner of the magazine? Why?

2. Role-play

In groups of two or three, act out one of the following situations. Resolve the problem in each skit.

a.You and your wife or husband have a ten-year-old child. S/he has asked for permission to stay up late and watch a movie. You know that the movie contains a certain amount of violence. You don‘t want your child to see it. Your husband disagrees.

36

b.You have just discovered a pornographic magazine in your thirteen-year-old son‘s room. You decide to speak to him about it. Decide what questions you will ask your son and whether you will punish him or not.

c.You are sixteen years old. You are trying to get into an R- rated movie, for adults, by using your friend‘s I.D. card. The ticket vendor is suspicious.

3. Talks

Use encyclopedias, reference books, culture dictionaries, the Internet and other resources and make short talks on different types of advertising:

-commercial

-billboard

-direct mail

-transit advertisement

-informercial

-banner

-other

4.Advertising Agency

You are a creative designer in an small advertising agency. Choose a product and design two ads for it: one for a magazine (it should contain pictures and be printed on an A4 page) and one for the radio

37

(it should contain sound effects, music and be recorded). Present your ads in the classroom and vote for the best one in each category.

5. Preparing a short presentation

A. In pairs, choose any pictures and imagine you are both presenting a TV news item on the event. Prepare a short presentation (about 1 minute) in note form to read out to the class. Include the following information.

when it happened, e.g. last night, early this morning

what happened, e.g. a flood, the Oscars

who is / was involved, e.g. hundreds of people, one person's name

what is happening now, e.g. flying abroad, cleaning up the mess

what will / might happen next, e.g. government action, re-housing, a new film

a quote by one of the people involved in the event, e.g. 'It was a fantastic experience' / 'We had no warning'.

B. In small groups, take it in turns to give your short presentation.

The following advice will help you.

Look directly at your audience. Maintaining eye contact will help you communicate your message and hold people's interest.

Refer to your notes from time to time but do not simply read them out in a boring way.

Take a deep breath and try to project your voice so that your audience can hear you clearly. Remember it is not necessary to shout at your audience.

38

C. In the same groups, decide what you think is the best way to learn

about what is happening in the world. Think about:

the difference between seeing moving pictures and photographs.

the amount of information given in a radio or TV news item and in a magazine or newspaper article.

the time busy people have to find out what's happening in the world.

how quickly situations can change.

6. Talk Show ―Children and Television‖

Someone will play the host. The host can use his/her own name or s/he can make up some name. Bring several chairs to the front of the class for the Talk Show guests. We might have one or two families, with mother and father and one or two children. The rest of the class will play the audience.

Each group needs time to prepare. The host will prepare an introduction to the show and a conclusion. It is the host‘s responsibility to monitor the time and make sure the show ends on schedule, perhaps after 15 minutes.

The parents and children will create their characters. They will devise a home scenario about their children and TV. How much TV do the kids watch? Are there problems, benefits? Are there problems monitoring the TV content, etc? The families will introduce themselves, each person adding his or her own share. The role of the

39

audience is to prepare a list of questions to ask.

After the host introduces the families, the family members will explain their specific home situations regarding television. Then the host will ask for questions from the audience.

7. Cell Phone Usage

Many students have and/or love cell phones. Here are some questions for students in pairs or groups.

1.Do you have a cell phone? If not, why?

2.How much time do you spend on your cell phone per day?

3.About how many calls do you receive or make?

4.Do you ever secretly send SMS messages during class time?

5.Does it bother you when other people‘s phones ring during

class, or at the movies, or in the library?

6.Do you ever sneak off to another room or check your messages? For instance, if you were on a date with someone.

7.Would it be hard to go through the day without your phone?

8.Do you truly need your phone?

8.Classroom Survey

A. Take a classroom survey. Gather the results. The answers should

be yes, no, or neither.

1. Do you find people yakking [talking a lot] on their phones a

major irritation?
