New York City.

New York, officially called New York, is located on the Eastern Atlantic coast of the united States, at the mouth of the Hudson River.

New York City is made of five boroughs separated by various waterways. Brooklyn and Queens occupy the western portion of Long Island, while Staten Island and Manhattan are completely on their own land mass. The public ferry goes from Manhattan to Staten Island. The Bronx, to the north, remains attached to the New York State mainland. Each borough could be an independent large city, especially Brooklyn, having the population of 2.5 million people.

New York City is one of the three most important cities in the world. The other two are London and Tokyo. The headquarters of the United Nations Organization (shortly UN) is located here since 1951.

The history of New York City started 1n 1524 when the 16^th century Florentine explorer Giovanni Da Verrazano sailed into New York Harbor and landed on the Staten Island. Henry Hudson also visited it, but Dutch settlements truly began the city. In 1624 the town of New Amsterdam was established on lower Manhattan. Peter Minuit supposedly bought the island from its Native American inhabitants for about $24 worth of trinkets. In 1664 the English seized the colony and renamed it New York. During the American Revolution they held it from 1776 to 1781.

New York was briefly (1789-90) the U.S. capital and was state capital until 1797. By 1790 it was the largest U.S. city, and the opening (1825) of the Erie Canal, linking New York with the Great Lakes, led to even greater expansion.

In 1898 a new charter was adopted, making the city Greater New York, a metropolis of five boroughs. Massive immigration, mainly from Europe, swelled the city’s population in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries. After World War II, many African Americans from the South, Puerto Ricans and Latin Americans migrated to the city in search of jobs.

New York City is often called the Capital of the World. The greater portion of the city’s population is immigrants from 180 countries of world. The city is very cosmopolite. It is the only place in the world where all nationalities and national groups live together so peacefully. The crime level in the city is comparatively low. In 2003 New York City was one of the safest cities in the US.

The nickname of the city is “the Big Apple”. It comes from the slang of jazz musicians of the 1930s. They would say: “the apple tree has many apples, but if you are lucky to play in New York, be sure you have the biggest apple in your hands”.

There are hundreds of museums of world importance as well as galleries and theaters in New York, that is why it is called the cultural and entertainment center of the western world. The most well-known museums are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Lincoln Art Center. Broadway is the symbol of American theater. The best plays, musicals and other shows are in Broadway or off-Broadway theaters.

The Bronx is the home of New York’s two greatest landmarks, the Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium.

New York is also famous for its skyscrapers. The Empire State Building (102 stories) is the tallest of them. Rockefeller Center is also an interesting architectural ensemble consisting of 15 skyscrapers and housing all kinds of offices, enterprises, theaters and music halls and one of the biggest American TV channel studios: the CNN. Unfortunately the tragedy of September 11, 2001 destroyed the 110-storied Twin Towers of the World Trading Center, but the City’s authorities plan to rebuild them.

New York has its own official flag. The official seal bears the emblem of the City that comprises Eagle, the symbol of the city; Indian stands for native Americans who lived on this territory before Europeans; Sailor with navigation tools represents the settlement or Europeans; Beaver symbolize the Dutch East Indian Campaign and the firs European settlement in New York; Wind Mill, Barrel and Flower are associated with the early development of the industry.

And the most well-known and famous landmark of New York is the Statue of Liberty given to the United States as a gift from the French. This statue greeted millions of immigrants to the United States and still attracts millions of visitors every year.
