VI. D. Read the text Birmingham and discuss it (from Easy English № 38)

Birmingham is one of the oldest and biggest cities in Great Britain. It is in West Midlands region and used to be an Anglo-Saxon hamlet. In the 13th century it became a market town and in the 16th century a well-known metallurgy centre. In 1775 the first factory of steam machines was built there. The 18th century was the time of the biggest development of the city and growth of population. Today Birmingham is the main industrial city of Great Britain.

Birmingham is not just an industrial landscape, though it is also a nice city with a lot of things to see. There are museums and galleries there and also a few old churches such as St. Martin’s Church, which dates back to the 13th century, and St. Philip’s Cathedral from the 18th century. In the old part of the city there is the Town Hall, which was built in the 1st half of the 19th century.

Apart from the historical spots, there are also places where you can enjoy yourself with the whole family. One such place is the Drayton Manor Family Theme Park, which offers more than 250 acres of fun, including splash canyon and pirate adventures. It is a great amusement park, where everyone can return to their childhood.
