Fuels

Most of the world's oil supply is used as fuel, either in engines to produce power or as a source of heat and light in industry and the home. The world is dependent for most of its power and heat (apart from that of the sun) on the burning of fuels, and for many centuries wood and coal were the main fuels. The advent of liquid petroleum fuels revolutionized our way of life by making possible the development of the internal combustion engine and hence the motor vehicle, the airplane and industrial machinery generally.

All fuels need air for burning and the more intimate the mixture of air and fuel, the more complete and efficient the combustion. Gaseous fuels, and liquid fuels that vaporize easily, mix readily with air while liquid fuels that do not vaporize easily can be atomized into minute droplets which disperse rapidly throughout the air. Intimate mixing of the fuel with air permits the extremely rapid burning that takes place in the internal combustion engine. Solid fuels cannot be so easily dispersed in air, and consequently, are difficult to burn quickly and efficiently. Petroleum fuels thus have an inherent advantage over solid fuels in their ease of dispersion and combustion. They also have the advantage of being almost completely combustible, with little ash, and of being easily stored and handled.

Petroleum fuels comprise both gaseous and liquid fuels and the latter can be classified according to (heir volatility into gasoline, kerosene, gas oil, diesel fuel and fuel oil. These various types are described below.
