Days and months

In Italian, days of the week (i giorni della settimana) and months (i mesi) do not have capital letters. Notice that with months you generally use in: in ottobre (in October); with days you use nothing: lunedì (on Monday), but when it means every Monday you use the article (il/la): il lunedì (on Mondays).

Time and numbers

On a day-to-day basis Italians use the 12-hour clock, sometimes adding di mattina (in the morning), di pomeriggio

(in the afternoon), di sera (in the evening), or di notte (at night). To say the time you say Sono le…, as in Sono le dieci (It’s ten o’clock), except for It’s one o’clock, which is È l’una.

4 Words to remember: higher numbers

To say 21, 31, and so on, you say ventuno, trentuno, etc. After that, just add the number as in ventidue (22), ventitré

(23), trentadue (32), trentatré (33).

To say the date, you generally use the regular number: Oggi è il 26 settembre

(Today is September 26th).

The exception is the first day of the month when you say “the first,” as in Domani è il primo febbraio
