points for optimization into novel health products like medicines, cosmetics and food supple-
ments. However, there are still some barriers to overcome mainly due to some issues such as
its accessibility and sustainable supply and regulatory limitations.
This review provides a broad overview of natural-based health products and representa-
tive contributions to human health. To enlarge and establish the usefulness of natural prod-
ucts, it is now mandatory to focus on identification of unused plants, to find new sources of
bioactives. Once this new lead molecule is obtained, it should be fully characterized. For a
drug, this can be used for further exploration through QSAR studies, molecular modeling,
and in vivo studies followed by clinical trials (phase 1e4). But when a novel drug comes
out with success, intellectual property rights can be a hurdle task, since naturally occurring
compounds in their original form may not easily be patented. Besides, in this point, the legal
frameworks of these products vary between countries and this fact can limit the process.
Another key challenge is that scientific and technological expertises are often scattered
over many companies and academic institutions. Thus, focused efforts are needed to better
support this translation. A possible solution to improve it could be to focus the relevant
expertise under one umbrella and in close spatial proximity. But this only happens because
the humanity is gifted with nature, and human being is skilled with brain; so let us make use
of it.
