The main division of expressive means
1. The definition of the term style.
2. Norm and deviation.
3. The connection of stylistics with other branches of linguistics.
4. The main division of expressive means.
1. One and the same message may be rendered in different ways. The difference in the
expression constitutes style. The English word style comes from Latin stilus – a little pointed stick used for writing on waxed tablets. By metonymy this word came to be used for the manner of writing (e.g. laconic, clear-cut style). By further widening of meaning it came to denote the manner of speaking and then the manner of doing something. In linguistics the term style applies to:
1) the aesthetic function of the language;
2) expressive means in the language;
3) synonymous ways of rendering one and the same idea; the manner of speaking/writing
peculiar to a definite sphere of communication. (e.g. business, colloquial);
4) a system of special devices called stylistic devices;
5) the individual manner of an author in making use of language.
2. Any language consists of compulsory features (constants, norms) and optional features (variables, deviations). The constants are the rules of the language, the vocabulary common to all types of speech. In the literary language the norm is the invariant of phonetic, morphological, lexical, syntactical patterns peculiar to a certain language at a certain period of time. Variables deviate from the rules, but never too much not to bring misunderstanding. We recognize variables because we have a set of constants in our mind. Style resides in the manipulation of variables, in the selection of optional features. In literature deviation from the norm can be great.
E.g. Five lifetimes later
he heard his voice repeat, unrecognizably, “Why, Jenny!” (M.
Stewart).
Ten years and three children earlier and disapproval. (E. Bombeck).

Stylistics
3.
(St) is a linguistic science dealing with the principles of choice and usage of lexical, grammatical and phonetic means for expressing thought and emotion under different conditions of communication.
St can’t be separated from Grammar, Lexicology and Phonetics. They study different aspects of the system of the language. St has to do with the same material from the point of view of its expressiveness and fitness for some specific purposes and conditions of speech.
Stylistic Phonetics
(or Phonostylistics) is engaged in the study of style-forming phonetic features of the text. It describes the prosodic features of prose and poetry and variants of pronunciation in different types of speech (colloquial or oratory or recital).
Stylistic Lexicology (semasiology)
studies the semantic structure of the word and the interrelation (or interplay) of the connotative and denotative meanings of the word, as well as the transference of meaning from literary to figurative (e.g. metaphor, metonymy)
Stylistic Morphology
is interested in the stylistic potentials of specific grammatical forms and
categories, such as the number of the noun, or the peculiar use of tense forms of the verb, etc.
Stylistic Syntax
has to do with the expressive order of words, types of syntactic links (asyndeton, polysyndeton), figures of speech (antithesis, chiasmus, etc.). It also deals with bigger units from paragraph onwards.
4. The main division of expressive means
1. "Ancient"/
traditional
means is traditionally subdivided into 2 classes:
classification.
The whole stock of stylistically relevant language
tropes and figures of speech.
TROPES comes from Greek τροπος which means a turn, a change of meaning from literal to figurative, a transference of meaning.
FIGURES OF SPEECH: comprise two groups - figures of construction
and figures of diction. Figures of construction are deviations from the regular syntactical pattern, the use of construction aimed at intensifying the meaning. Figures of diction deal with sound effects.
2. Functional classification.
divided into
figurative and expressive
According to it all stylistically relevant language means are
language means (изобразительные и
выразительные).
FIGURATIVE language means embrace all kinds of the transference of meaning. They include not only words as in tropes, but word combinations and even phonemes - everything that evokes images.
EXPRESSIVE language means are those which intensify the power of an utterance through special arrangement of the language material, especially through syntactical structures, but also all types of intensifiers, alliteration etc.

3. Level-oriented
classification. It is simply organized and very detailed. I.R. Galperin
subdivides expressive means and stylistic devices into:
a) phonetic b) lexical c) syntactical.
The terms expressive means and stylistic devices are not completely synonymous. Not all expressive means are stylistic devices, e.g. pauses, logical stress, diminutive suffixes, intensifiers, emphatic constructions "If only...!" etc. A stylistic device is a generalized literary model employed for an expressive purpose.

Descriptivetropes
DT include metaphoric, metonymic and mixed groups. All of them have one feature in common: they are built on the presence of some common features in the objects described and some other objects. Two objects or ideas may be associated by similarity or contiguity. Metaphoric group is based on the former, metonymic - on the latter, mixed group is based on both.
A.Metaphoricgroup
Metaphor
features when two unlike objects are compared by identification. M. is often called a hidden comparison, but no comparing word is used.
