Make a "hair-do" apron from a large bath towel that has become too thin for good
drying. Fold in half crosswise, cut out a circle to fit the neck and cut an opening down the
front. Bind with bias tape. Sew a large pocket at the bottom of the apron. Make a smaller
narrow pocket on the other side. In the large pocket keep rollers or clips. In the small
pocket keep your comb. It keeps your dress clean, and is easy to launder as it needs no
ironing.
To check an immediate run in nylon hose,1 did you know you could use colourless
nail polish? Of course, if it isn't on hand and the run is above the knee or some place it
doesn't show, red is always acceptable in an emergency. At least it keeps the run from
running down to your ankle.
When applying snaps to any garment, sew all of the small portions of the snap (with
the little point) on the garment first. Then take a piece of chalk and touch this little point.
Turn your material over, rub it with your finger ... and you will find that you will have
marked the exact place where the snap should be sewed on the other side. Just sew the
other portion of the snap on the chalked dot.

wants examining, isn't it? Read the following to determine the pattern of thought
each author employs. Express your opinion concerning the problem:
Part I
Whenever you see an old film, even made as little as ten years ago, you cannot help
being struck by the appearance of women taking part. Their hair-styles and make-up look
dated, skirts look either too long or too short; their general appearance is, in fact, slightly
ludicrous. The men taking part in the film, on the other hand, are clearly recognizable.
There is nothing about their appearance to suggest that they belong to an entirely different
age.
This illusion is created by changing fashions. Over the years, the great majority of
men have successfully resisted all attempts to make them change their style of dress. The
same cannot be said of women. This year the designers decide in their arbitrary fashion
skirts will be short and waists will be high; zips are in and buttons are out. Next year the
law is reversed and far from taking exception, no one is even mildly surprised.
Changing fashions are nothing more than the deliberate creation of waste. Many
women squander vast sums of money each year to replace clothes they have hardly even
worn. Women who cannot afford to discard clothing in this way, waste hours of their time

altering the dresses they have. Hemlines are taken up or let down; waistlines are taken in
or let out; necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can claim that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to
society. Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and
durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the
fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort, providing they look right.
When comparing men and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn
are obvious. Do the constantly changing fashions of women's clothes, one wonders, reflect
basic qualities of fickleness and instability? Men are too sensible to let themselves be
bullied by fashion designers. Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of
stability? That is for you to decide.
Part II
Fashion — why does it change? Because change is one of nature's laws. If there was
no change, there would be no motion, there would be no life.
Change is ever going forward in nature. Today it is spring! and all nature is waking
to new life. A few weeks hence, and every tree and shrub will be clothed in a robe of
green, sprinkled with blossoms. Later, the green of various shades will merge into the
autumn tints, and later still, nature will do her robe entirely, only to clothe herself in the
coming years again with various changes, according to the seasons.
So mankind instinctively changes in style of costume, often for the better, and
sometimes, it must be admitted, for the worse. But the change ever goes forward, fashion
repeating itself within the century, often within a generation, almost as certainly as the
seasons do within the year.
There is no use, therefore, in issuing a fiat against changes of fashion. Best
judgment is shown in accepting of the inevitable and adapting ourselves to circumstances.

Манекенщицы, похожие друг на друга, совершенно не походили на обычных
женщин, словно бы они не родились на свет, как все люди, а были, как и их одежды,
созданы по рисункам и чертежам художников-модельеров. Они выходили на сцену,
одетые в платья, фасон которых был якобы продиктован глубоко народными
настроениями художника, жить нормальной жизнью в них тем не менее не
представлялось никакой возможности. И мужчины демонстрировали элегантные
костюмы фрачного типа, в которых не стыдно явиться на дипломатический прием
или показывать с эстрады фокусы. Галстуков мужчины не носили. Воротники их
кружевных сорочек были заколоты большими сияющими брошами.
Потом в зале зажегся свет, и публика, заметно стесняясь, потянулась к выходу.
Люди были, несомненно, принаряжены, одеты в праздничные платья и недурно
сшитые костюмы, однако после фейерверка ослепительных, фантастических
туалетов все они невольно выглядели бедными родственниками. Все эти
«послеобеденные» ансамбли, макси-шубки из зернистого каракуля, платья с
крыльями, броши вместо галстуков делались не для них. Не для этих людей. Эти
люди не беседуют при свечах у камина, не меняют своей фигуры в зависимости от
того, что сейчас вдохновляет отцов моды возраст юности или возраст элегантности.
У них своя жизнь, более скромная, чем обязывают к тому норковые
палантины, но не менее содержательная и общественно полезная от этого. Это

жизнь людей трудящихся, занятых, деловых, семейных. У них свой стиль, пусть не
такой блистательный, но, несомненно, достойный уважения и внимания.
Достойный, наконец, понимания, что именно он и определяет собой уклад всей
страны, где роскошь не является ни мерилом счастья и успеха, ни явлением,
требующим серьезного обсуждения.
Если говорить серьезно, то настоящий художник-модельер должен бы понять,
что работает он все же не для Софи Лорен и герцогини Мальборо, а для миллионов
трудящихся людей со своими условиями жизни и четкими моральными
принципами. Среди читателей наверняка найдутся такие, которые возмутятся:
«Опять третируют моду!» Найдутся и те, что скажут: «Так им, стилягам, и надо!»
Так вот, ни тем, ни другим нет повода огорчаться или радоваться. Мода —
вещь естественная и необходимая. Сардонически улыбаться вслед длинным юбкам
столь же неумно, сколь и вслед юбкам коротким. Мы просто полагаем, что от века
нужно брать то, что способно принести радость максимальному числу людей, что
облегчит их труд, что украсит их будни и праздники. Все внешние атрибуты жизни
хороши, когда они помогают человеку почувствовать себя свободным, красивым,
внутренне уверенным в себе. Это не пренебрежение к вещам, это напоминание о
неизбежной ограниченности вещного идеала.
