counselor can perform many jobs during the treatment of a patient; they frequently
work with addicts at every stage, from deep in the clutches of drugs to those in
recovery for years.
Many drug counselors have a master’s or bachelor’s degree in a related area from
a university. Typically, they study psychology, sociology, public health, or medicine.
Some regions also allow drug counselors to practice if they have completed a trade
school or training course that specializes in addiction therapy. It is important to
study the licensing and legal practice guidelines of a region carefully as they can

anxiety, and even new addictions not only in the primary patient but also in other
family members. Counselors are skilled in seeing not only the forest but the trees;
one goal of addiction treatment is to create a healthy living and social environment
for the addict that will make relapse less likely.
Some drug addiction counselors work with drug treatment centers or rehabilitation
centers. In this job, a counselor may have individual patients or may conduct group

goals and plans for the future in order to build a healthier lifestyle, post-rehab.
A drug addiction counselor may also work closely with the justice system in several
capacities. They may be asked to assess a possible addict as part of a trial, or to

sentence. Since these patients are not always willing participants, working in this
arena is often considered extremely difficult.

What does a Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor do?
A licensed substance abuse counselor seeks to help and support people who are
suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. Often, this help and support will also
extend to the substance abuser’s family. A substance abuse counselor helps his
client to recognize harmful behaviors and learn to overcome them. The counselor
can also provide crisis counseling sessions and refer clients to agencies that can
assist them in other areas. Different states may have different requirements for
becoming a licensed substance abuse counselor, but many require a master’s degree
in psychology or a related field.
While one of the rewards of being a licensed substance abuse counselor is seeing
clients overcome addiction and live a substance abuse-free life, there are also
several difficult downsides to the job. Many people who start in the field drop out
due to the sometimes severe emotional demands. Counselors must be prepared
to watch some of their clients slip back into addiction, go to jail, or even die.
They also must be prepared to be exposed to the difficult and often sad situations

In addition to counseling sessions, a licensed substance abuse counselor may need
to help a client find assistance from other agencies. For example, if the abuser has a
health problem, the counselor may refer him to a medical clinic. The counselor may
also run drug tests and help to keep track of a client’s progress, as well as offering

Many careers exist in the field of drug abuse treatment and prevention. The drug
abuse treatment field is a rewarding career choice for many people, as it makes a
difference in the lives of millions of people annually. Those who work in this field
use hard work and determination to help patients earn sobriety, which is worth
more than a paycheck to many.
It is unfortunate that 23.5 million people required treatment for drug or alcohol
abuse in 2009 according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services
Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Of these
23.5 million people, only a mere 2.6 million received care at a specialized facility.
The drug abuse treatment field is booming with careers for compassionate, caring
individuals. Careers in drug abuse are based at many locations including detention
centers, research facilities, educational centers, hospitals, methadone clinics, private
practices, detoxification centers, mental health centers and drug rehabilitation

Finding Drug Abuse Jobs
The first step in finding a drug abuse career is to evaluate how you would like to
help people suffering from drug dependence. There are many careers dealing with
all aspects of drug rehabilitation, from direct care to researching potential cures
for drug addiction and prevention. Evaluating your skill set and interests will help
you make the best career decision.
The most common career in drug abuse work is the addiction counselor. Addiction
counselors are professionals that work with children, teens and adults suffering
from drug abuse problems and other addictions, such as gambling. Together with

implement a plan of recovery. With the patient, they work on the problems that drug

The decision of which type of therapist to go to depends on the severity of the

Social workers work with various agencies to find proper care for those suffering
from substance abuse problems. They are interested in the safety and welfare of

Drug Abuse Employment Training
Careers in the drug abuse sector require different levels of education depending on
the career and the level of responsibility that comes with it. Some require simply
a high school diploma, while others require a degree such as:

to complete a supervised period of time under a licensed member of their field.
This can range from several weeks to over a year.
Nurses and detoxification specialists carry associate’s degrees or bachelor’s degrees
in their respected career. All states require nurses to carry nursing licenses in the

growth of 26% in the next decade.
Social workers, professors and researchers are all required to have at least a
bachelor’s degree in a related field. Some employers may require a master’s degree

Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification
Becoming a certified alcohol and drug counselor can be a rewarding career path
for the helping professional. The International Alcohol and Drug Counselor (IADC)
committee sets minimum standards for alcohol and drug counselor certification in
49 states in the United States and several countries. In the US, state boards are
entrusted with adhering to these standards, and certification titles vary regionally. The
most sought after alcohol and drug counselor certification are chemical dependency
professional, certified substance abuse counselor, and alcohol and drug counselor.
In addition to state certifications, the IADC committee issues alcohol and drug
counselor certification in ranked order, from entry level alcohol and drug counselors to
clinical supervisor, for those counselors who would like to advance their credentials.
Specializations offered internationally and at the state level include drug and alcohol
prevention specialist and certified justice addictions professional. Substance abuse
professionals with the US Department of Transportation (DOT) are required to have
international certification.
