.pdfOn this sort of holiday you should be thoroughly relaxed and soak in the sun and sea air. There is nothing better for giving you vitality and energy to keep you going through the winter.
A winter holiday is probably even better for you than a summer one. You need it more at that time of a year.
Once you learn to ski, you can go on doing to a very advanced age, as long as you don't do it too strenuously and break a leg. If this happens it will take a long time to heal and you may never be able to ski again.
There are many other things to do besides skiing. Skating is amusing, and not all that difficult to learn. You can walk on snowshoes, and the mountains are particularly lovely when you get away from the crowded ski slopes.
It is even easier to sunburn in the snow than on the beach, so be careful, but do get some sun — it will keep you healthier for the rest of the winter.

ALL SORTS OF THINGS CAN GO WRONG
John Byron is a tour guide who takes coach parties through Europe
All sorts of things can go wrong on these tours. One of the worst problems is when the bookings are wrong. For example, you arrive late at the hotel and there are only thirty beds when you’ve got forty people on the bus! You have to be very resourceful. You have to sort out problems quickly.
There is always one big drama during a tour. Last year in Austria a man in my party had an asthma attack in the middle of the night and I had to call a doctor. The man couldn’t breathe. In fact he nearly died and the hotel owner was very worried because he didn’t want a death in his hotel! The doctor forgot to bring any alcohol to sterilize his needles and he had to use some local brandy from the hotel bar! You have to be on your toes all the time in this job!
Correct the statements which are wrong:
1.One of the worst problems is arriving late and finding that you are at the wrong hotel.
2.In Austria, a man in John’s group nearly died of an asthma attack.
3.The hotel owner was upset because the man was very ill.
4.The doctor forgot his needle.
5.The doctor drank some brandy from the bar.

HOLIDAY PLANS
Mary: Have you had your holiday for this year yet, Jane?
Jane: Not yet. I’m taking it at the end of September.
Mary: Where are you going? Have you made up your mind?
Jane: Not really. I thought of going to Spain again, but I’ve already been there twice and I’d like to try somewhere new.
Mary: My brother’s just gone to Mexico for two weeks. I had a card from him yesterday and he seems to be having a good time. Why don’t you go there?
52
Jane: That’s O.K. for you well-off people, but I couldn’t possibly afford it. I’m much too hard up at the moment.
Mary: The air-fare is quite expensive, I admit, but you needn’t spend a lot of when you get there.
Jane: I’ve already spent a lot of money this year. My flat was done up much to spare for expensive holidays abroad.
Mary: Oh, I see.
Jane: Perhaps I’ll just go to Scotland or Ireland in the end. I’ve heard they’re both very beautiful, and I haven’t been to either of them.
Mary: We went to Ireland two years ago to pay Jill and her husband a visit. They’re in Dublin now.
Jane: Oh, yes, so they are!
Mary: If you decide on Ireland you can call in on them. Jill would willingly put you up for a few days, I’m sure.
Jane: That’s a good idea! I haven’t seen Jill for more than three years now and I’d like to know how she’s getting on.

OLYMPIC GAMES
The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began in 777 BC in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries at Olympia. They included many different kinds of sports: running, boxing, wrestling, etc. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to Olympia to compete in the Games. For the period of the Games all the wars stopped. So the Olympic Games become the symbol of peace and friendship.
In 394 AD the Games were abolished and were not renewed until many centuries later.
In 1894, a Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, addressed all the sports governing bodies and pointed out the significance of sports and its educational value.
Two years later the first modern Olympic Games took place. Of course, the competitions were held in Greece to symbolize the continuation of the centuries-old tradition.
In 1896 the International Olympic Committee was set up. It is the central poli- cy-making body of the Olympic movement. It is formed by the representatives of all countries which take part in the Olympic Games. The International Committee decides upon the programme of the games, the number of the participants and the city - host for the Games. Over one hundred and fifty countries are represented in the International Olympic Committee now. Besides, each country has its National Olympic Committee.
Summer and Winter Games are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the Games. The most suitable is selected by the International Committee. After that the city of the Games starts preparations for the competitions, construct new sports facilities, stadiums, hotels, press centers. Thousands of athletes,
