supply electricity for all the onboard services. Maintenance of the machinery is done onboard, and fuel is stored in tanks placed at the very bottom of the ship. The First Engineer is second in charge of the engine room. The Second Officer Electrical looks after all the electrical systems on board.

All staff (crew) are trained in emergency procedures before they join the ship and safety drills take place weekly.

UNIT 8. HYDROGRAPHY

Vocabulary:

charting — нанесение объектов на морскую карту;

to deal with — иметь дело с;

prediction — прогнозирование;

measurement — измерение;

description — описание;

defence — защита;

environmental protection — защита окружающей среды;

mapping — картография;

to support safety of navigation — поддерживать безопасность навигации;

to survey — производить съемку.

1. Work at the text and do the exercises given below:

What is hydrography? Hydro means water, graphy means writing. In brief, hydrography means charting of bodies of water such as seas, oceans and lakes.

In general, hydrography is the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defense, scientific research, and environmental protection.

It is a science of measurement, description and mapping of the surface water of the Earth especially with reference to safe navigation.

Hydrography is defined by the IHO (International Hydrographic Organization). A principal aim of the IHO is to ensure that all the world's seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted. The International Hydrographic Organization is an intergovernmental consultative and technical organization that was established in 1921 to support safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment.

2. Translate these sentences into English to reinforce your vocabulary skills:

1)Гидрография имеет дело с измерением и описанием физических свойств океанов, морей, прибрежных зон, озер и рек.

2)Связана ли гидрография с защитой окружающей среды?

3)Какова основная цель Международной гидрографической организации?

53

4)Она была основана для поддержания безопасности навигации и защиты окружающей среды.

5)Какая международная конвенция регламентирует охрану морской

среды?

3. Work at the text below and be ready to speak about hydrographer’s job.

What do hydrographic surveyors do?

Hydrographic surveying “looks” into the ocean to see what the sea floor looks like.

Surveyors conduct hydrographic surveys to measure the depth and bottom configuration of water bodies. Surveyors use the data to update nautical charts and develop hydrographic models.

Surveyors pay particular attention to acquiring the precise location of least (shoalest) depths, to warn mariners of dangers to navigation, and they record the precise location of aids to navigation. They also record tide or water level measurements to provide a vertical reference (mean lower low water) for water depths. Surveys can also determine sea floor material (i.e. sand, mud, rock), which is important for anchoring, dredging, structure construction, pipeline and cable routing, and fisheries habitat.

Hydrographic surveyors, also known as hydrographers, specialise in precise positioning, data acquisition and processing in marine environments.

The information about measuring and mapping the world's underwater surfaces and studying the morphology (construction) of the seabed, showing the depth, shape and contours is used in:

the production of charts and related information for navigation;

dredging;

locating offshore resources (oil, gas);

positioning offshore wind farms, oil platforms and subsea cables;

planning dock installations.

The work may be onshore or offshore, depending on the specialist area, but usually involves time spent on board survey ships and drilling platforms.

Hydrography also refers to:

the geographical, geological and geophysical features of the seabed;

various specific hazards to navigation. Hazards can be either natural (rocks, reefs, shoals, breakers) or artificial (wrecks, marine structures, cables and pipelines areas);

54

the currents, tides and certain physical properties of the sea water;

hydrography also describes adjoining coastal area with special reference to its use for the purpose of navigation.

All the hydrographic information must be properly processed by computer software so that the data can be accurately depicted in the form of a chart and related publications, such as Coast Pilots, Tide Tables, List of Lights, Notices to Mariners.

So, you will study hydrography for 4 years. You will study principles of hydrographic surveying, positioning, depth determination, seafloor classification and feature detection, water levels and flow, topographic surveying, hydrographic practice.

Survey vessels primarily use side scan and multibeam sonar. Sonar (which was originally an acronym for SOund NAvigation and Ranging) uses sound waves to find and identify objects in the water and to determine water depth. Some vessels may use single beam echo sounders.

4.Answer the following questions in order to test yourselves for comprehension:

1) What is the purpose of hydrographic surveys?

2) What is important for anchoring, dredging, structure construction, pipeline and cable routing, and fisheries habitat?

3) Surveyors record tide or water level measurements, don’t they?

4) What are sea floor materials?

5) What hazards to navigation do you know?

6) Where is hydrographic information depicted?

7) What are survey vessels used for?

8) What is hydrographic equipment?

9) What is SONAR?

10) What is SONAR used for?

5.Make a presentation about hydrographer’s job under your own plan.
