The reason: all those obtaining their driving licenses after that date are prohibited for a year from driving at night unless accompanied by someone over the age of 25. They cannot get a license at all until they have completed 50 hours of driving, ten of them at night, under adult supervision; and they cannot get a full license until they have driven for a year with no violations.

I. My name’s Jordan Baker. I’m just a normal kid, like everybody else. I have an 18-year-old sister and a close relationship with all of my family. But, unlike other kids, I never go to bed on Sunday night and dread having to go to school the next day. I actually look forward to it! That’s because I’m a homeschooler. I’m sure most kids imagine I can get up whenever I want, watch TV and pretty much goof off all day. But it’s not like that at all.

II. Basically, I wake up every weekday at about 8 a.m., shower and get dressed. After breakfast, I do algebra in the kitchen with my mom, then we move on to other subjects. My mom is my main teacher (even though she’s not certified), but my dad helps out, too. After lunch, if I have a big load of schoolwork, I study for another hour or two and then have piano lessons. After that, I either play tennis or eat dinner and

maybe watch TV or read. I also work out at a gym two or three days a week to be sure I get enough exercise.

III. My favorite subjects are history and literature, and my least favorite is algebra because it doesn’t come easy to me. I study the same stuff most kids learn in public school but at my own pace. And, yes, I do have to take tests and exams like everybody else. As a matter of fact, I take standardized tests every year just to see how I’m doing. Right now, I’m about a year ahead. That means I’m going to graduate when I’m 16 – I don’t think I could have done that if I’d gone to public school. Graduating early brings me closer to my ultimate goal, which is to become either a pediatrician or a teacher in Africa.

IV. I would say the greatest thing about homeschooling is that I can study things that apply to what is going on in my life. Plus, since my schedule is flexible, we get to travel and take day trips when we feel like it rather than waiting for summer vacation or field trips.

V. Even with all the pluses, there are a few downsides. Making new friends can be tricky – of course, it’s not so easy to socialize when there are no other kids around. Luckily, I have friends from church and extracurricular activities (most of them go to public school). We stay in touch through e-mail. One day, I’d like to homeschool my own kids – even with all the work involved – because I know it’s definitely worth it.

(A43) ... Do not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and retaining crucial information. But do not overdo it. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important. An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first exam, get into the habit of being up and ready to work by 9 a.m. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.

(A44) ... On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack two of everything you need (pens, pencils, erasers, etc.), then make your way to the examination hall in good time. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people’s anxiety can be contagious, and you may suffer from undue panic.

(A45) ... Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax.

(A46) ... When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular at-

tention to key verbs such as “discuss”, “compare” and “evaluate”. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.

(A47) ... It is wise always to allow for 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write legibly and succinctly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical answers.

(A48) ... Try not to be tempted to look at those around you, or at the clock. If you do need something else to focus on to help collect your thoughts, choose a fixture in the room, such as the ceiling or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted. Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the inevitable post-mortem by other students. Go and have a well-earned rest – then prepare for your next exam.
