The fertile land remaining after the Nile spill was suitable for cultivation, while the desert served as a natural barrier to foreign invaders. In the 4th millennia BC in the Nile valley agriculture spread and the first city-state-nomes appeared. At the turn of the 4th and 3rd millennia BC scattered settlements United in two kingdoms: the Southern and Northern. About 3100 BC the Southern Kingdom won the final victory over the Northern and the king of the South Menes, or Narmer, became the ruler of the United Egypt.
Menes was the founder of the first of 33 Egyptian dynasties. Over the next 3000 years, Egypt was ruled by a long line of rulers — pharaohs. In 30 BC the last Queen of Egypt Cleopatra seven committed suicide, and Egypt fell under Roman rule. The history of Ancient Egypt is divided into four main periods of stability — Ancient, Middle,
New Kingdom and Late period — divided by one and two interjacent periods, when the traditional regularity in the country was infringed by civil wars and invasions.
The level of the Nile annually rose and fell, leaving a layer of fertile silt in the floodplain and allowing to build composite irrigation systems. This made Ancient Egypt the richest region, feeding the population of the country and producing huge overages of food, on which a complex social system and unique scale construction projects were based. The huge majority of the country’s population were peasants, cultivating land leased from the nobility. They rarely lived to be 50 years old, and they were buried in holes in the middle of desert sands.
Less than nine percent of the population could read and write. This educated elite was the apparatus of officials who helped the Pharaoh to govern the state. They acquired untold wealth and built themselves expensive tombs during the life. Pharaoh in the representation of the Egyptians was both man and God, the head of secular power, the army and the priesthood. Egyptian artists have always depicted their kings as young, tall, strong men.

!VII. Make a written summary of Text 1. Nota Bene!
Asummary isa shorterversionofthe original.Sucha simplification highlightsthe majorpointsfromthe muchlongersubject, suchasa text, speech, film, or event. To write a summary, use your own words to express briefly the main idea and relevant details of the piece you have read. Your purpose in writing the summary is to give the basic ideas of the original reading. What was it about and what did the author want to communicate?
While reading the original work, take note of what or who is the focus and ask the usual questions that reporters use: Who? What?
When? Where? Why? How? Using these questions to examine what you are reading can help you to write the summary.
Sometimes, the centralideaofthe pieceisstatedinthe introduction or first paragraph, and the supporting ideas of this central idea are presented one by one in the following paragraphs. Always read the introductory paragraph thoughtfully and look for a thesis statement. Finding the thesis statement is like finding a key to a locked door. Frequently, however, the thesis, or central idea, is implied or suggested. Thus, you will have to work harder to figure out what the author wants readers to understand. Use any hints that may shed light on the meaning of the piece: pay attention to the title and any headings and to the opening and closing lines of paragraphs.
A written summary starts with a lead, including title, author, text type, and the main idea of the text. It has a clearly arranged structure and is paraphrased with new words without quotations from the text. Unlike a retelling, a summary is written in present tense or historical present. In summaries only indirect speech is used and depictions are avoided .
