At the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Ac__________my, young recruits learn a new language at a very fast p ___ce. By measuring their brains before and after the language training, a group of re_______chers has had an almost u_____que opportunity to observe what happens to the brain when we learn a new language in a short period of time. At the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy in the city of Uppsala, young people with a f______r for languages go from having no knowledge of a language such as Arabic, Russian or Dari to speaking it f______ly in the space of 13 months. From morning to evening, weekdays and weekends, the recruits study at a pace unlike on any other language course. As a control group, the researchers used medicine and cog__________ve science students at Umeå University – students who also study hard, but not languages. Both groups were given MRI scans before and after a three-month period of intensive study. While the brain structure of the control group remained unchanged, sp________fic parts of the brain of the language students grew. The parts that developed in size were the hip________pus, a deeplying brain structure that is involved in learning new material and spatial navi_______tion, and three areas in the cerebral cortex. “We were surprised that different parts of the brain developed to different degrees depending on how well the students per_______ed and how much effort they had had to put in to keep up with the course,” says Johan Mårtensson, a researcher in ps___________gy at Lund University, Sweden. Previous research from other groups has in_________ed that Alzheimer’s disease has a later _____

set in bilingual or multilingual groups. “Even if we cannot compare three months of intensive language study with a lifetime of being bilin_____, there is a lot to suggest that learning languages is a good way to keep the brain in shape,” says Johan Mårtensson.

Abstract

Notes

“You probably think you’re doing eve-

rything you can to stay healthy: you

get lots of sleep, exercise regularly and

try to avoid fried foods. But you may

be forgetting one important thing. Re-

lax! Stress has a bigger impact on your

health than you might realize, according

to research presented yesterday at the

annual conference of the American Psy-

chological Association in Boston.

Ohio State University psychologist

Janice Kiecolt-Glaser and her partner,

Ronald Glaser, an OSU virologist and

immunologist, have spent 20-odd years

researching how stress affects the im-

mune system, and they have made some

startling discoveries. An easy example

comes from their work with caregivers,

people who look after chronically ail-

ing spouses or parents (no one would

argue that this role is quite stressful).

In one experiment, Kiecolt-Glaser and

her colleagues administered flu vac-

cines to caregivers and control subjects

and compared the numbers of antibod-

ies – proteins involved in immune reac-

tions – that the two groups produced in

response. Only 38 percent of the car-

egivers produced what is considered an

adequate antibody response compared

to 66 percent of their relaxed counter-

parts, suggesting that the caregivers’

immune systems weren’t doing their

jobs very well – and that the stress of

caregiving ultimately put them at an in-

creased risk of infection.
