UNIT 1.
Bank Accounts
1. Read and translate the text:
People may more choice than ever before when they deposit money today. Many financial institutions, such as banks, saving and loan associations and credit unions offer different types of accounts. These accounts can be normal current accounts, deposit and saving accounts, or high interest accounts. Currently about 70 % of the population holds bank accounts. There are three basic reasons for this – convenience, finance organization and security. Many people also use these banks in one way or another – even if they do not have a bank account themselves.
Convenience. Your earnings can be paid direct to your bank account. Any other payments people might make to your bank in the some way. You can draw up whatever cash you need – when you need. When it comes to make payment to other people, you could find that a bank account is the simplest way to go about this.
Organizing your finance. A bank statement enables you to keep track of payment into your account; of any earnings from your saving; of the payments you make to other people – and the cash you draw out for spending.
Security. Making payment and transferring money through the banking system is more efficient – and much safer – than using for every transaction. Cash is sometimes easy to lose or to mislay.
Community service. Of the many services the banks provide to the community, there is one service that is often taken for granted. That is the task of maintaining a smooth flow of bank notes and coins throughout the country. Surplus currency is taken from an area having more than it requires to be redistributed in those areas that do not have sufficient. The banks take responsibility for this service.

Commercial Documentation in English
The normal banking account is the current account, running from day to day. A balance is shown at the end of any day on which there has been a debit or credit entry. No interest is normally allowed on current account. The bank is always seeking to attract new customers as it works to extend its business. Nevertheless, the holder of a current account must be carefully checked before he gets a cheque book. The bank send the customer statements of the account quarterly or half – yearly, or more often if he wishes. The account may remunerate the banker, because a good average credit balance is kept, but if it does not a commission charge may be debited to the account quarterly or half–yearly.
If current account is defined as an account which is opened so that cheques may be drawn on it, then a deposit account can be defined as an account which is open to earn interest. Deposit interest is paid at the rate determined by the bank’s base rate. No cheques are supposed to be collected from deposit account holder and no cheque books are issued. Withdrawals are nominally made at seven days’ notice, but can be obtained on demand. Interest is credited to the current account, if there is one, half–yearly, otherwise it is added to the balance of the deposit account. Interest rates may be fixed or variable, they may be simple or compounding. The annual simple interest rate states how much money the bank will pay on a deposit at the end of one year without compounding. However, the interest can be compounded, that is, interest can be earned on accumulated interest as well as the amount initially deposited.
Accounts may be single ownership accounts, which are owned by one person, or joint accounts, that is owned by two or more persons. A single account ownership account holder can give a person he or she wishes power of attorney, the right to withdraw funds from the account.
To open a bank account a client has to give the bank some back–ground information, such as:
a)full name and address
b)his or her occupation, employer’s name and address.
Two references are normally required, and the referees must themselves be considered of satisfactory status. Most important a specimen signature is given. Any signature on an order to the bank must be the same as this specimen.

UNIT 1. Bank Accounts
Explanation of the abbreviations
The transactions into/out of the account are identified by brief descriptions – often in abbreviated or code form. The explanation of these code abbreviations is given at the bottom of your statement. The ones you are most likely to encounter on a regular basis are:
BGC (Bank giro credit) shows that this was a payment into your account.
DD (Direct debit) shows a payment out of your account which your have authorized through the direct debit system.
DC or ATM (Cash dispenser) shows up each time you use your cash card. (The location of the cash dispenser may also be indicated).
SO or STO (Standing orders) shows a payment out of your account which you have authorized through the standing order system. The reference number of the standing order and who is paid to is also shown.
O/D or DR (Overdrawn balance) One of these codes will appear in the balance column if you have overdrawn your account at any time. It shows that your balance is in debit – in effect a minus figure.
CHS (Charges) Although it is quite possible to have a bank account and not pay any charges for its day to day use. Your bank will of course charge fees for any special services you have asked it to provide.
