Progress Reading Test
Part I (1–6)
Read the article divided into paragraphs (1–6) and choose the best title (A–G) for each paragraph. Use each letter only once.
Important matter
A. A list of priorities |
E. The aim of time management |
B. Realistic deadlines |
F. Time analysis |
C. Delegating responsibilities |
G. Time for important tasks |
D. Work-life balance |
|
1.Time is like money, people and equipment. It is a limited resource. Time management is about making the best possible use of it. So, what are the basic concepts of time management? There are three fundamental steps.
2.The first step is to analyse how you use your time now. This requires a methodical approach. Break your day into half an hour periods. Record what you do in each period. Look at the list and ask yourself which tasks were really necessary. Cut everything that is not important. Most wasted time is the result of unquestioned activity.
3.Take a look at the necessary tasks. Could someone else do them? Never do work yourself that can be safely delegated. Other people may not perform the tasks as well as you do. But without experience they will never learn.
4.The next step is to prioritize. Take the tasks which genuinely require your attention and put them in order of priority — which are the most important needs.
5.Lastly, organise your time and your tasks. Ask yourself ‘How much time will I need?’ Be realistic because work tends to expand to fill the time available. Set reasonable deadlines. The right amount of pressure brings
speed and high performance, but on the other hand, too much pressure means things can go wrong.
6. When possible, organise your work so as to have large blocks of time for top priority tasks like problem analysis and forward planning. Discover the time of day when you are at your best and assign the most difficult tasks to it. So, analyse, prioritize and organise.
Part II (7–12)
–Read the article with blanks and the sentences given below.
