1.Respect for women’s sport is not just politically correct. Media bosses are also seeing a commercial opportunity. More men than women watch women’s football matches; men prefer watching women’s tennis to men’s.
2.Old-fashioned opinions are beginning to look inexcusable. For example, Sir Stirling Moss, a Formula One champion, once doubted whether women had the “mental power” of motor racing.
3.In February a lap taken at 196mph gained Danica Patrick a pole position in part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup series — the first woman to do so, in a sport dominated by men. She won $6m last year plus $9m in sponsorship deals; ESPN The Magazine put her on its cover.
4.At the international level, women have never done better. London 2012 was the first Olympic games with nominal women’s participation from every country. America’s investment in its women athletes paid off: they won more medals than their men team mates.
5.There could be some changes in sports where women can compete alongside men. A petition for women to be allowed to ride in the Tour de France has attracted 93 000 signatures. Oxford and Cambridge Universities will hold the women’s boat race on the same day and the same course as the men’s event from 2015.
6.Men are also taking up activities once dominated by women. Kentrell Collins leads Prancing Elites, an all-boys cheerleading group. “The girls do it, so why can’t we?” he says.

It seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of bad teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels. A new study into teenage attitudes shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past.
“We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “There’re expected to be badly-behaved and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds. They worry about whether school is serving them well.
So it seems that this generation of parents is more likely to treat their children as friends. There’s more discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. My
