the presentation. The visual aid needs you, your interpretation, your explanation your conviction and your justification.
Visual aids can make information more memorable and they help the speaker. However, they must literally support what the speaker says and not simply replace the spoken information. It is also not enough to just read text from a visual aid. There are many advantages of the correct use of visual aids. They can show information which is not easily expressed in words or they can highlight information.
They cause the audience to employ another sense to receive information, they bring variety and therefore increase the audience’s attention. They save time and they clarify complex information.
Task 23. What are these visuals called in English? Match the numbers to the descriptions:
bar chart __ |
table __ |
technical drawing __ |
flow chart __ |
map __ |
line chart __ |
pie chart __ |
organization chart (organigram) __ |

Task 24. Which visual aid is best to show the information? Write the choice in the blank:
bar chart, flow chart organigram, pie chart, table
1.Use a ……… to show the growth in company expenses over the past five years.
2.Use a ……… to compare several features of three products to see similarities and differences.
3.Use a ……… to show the percent of customers (100%) who prefer different products.
4.Use a ……… to show the steps in the process of production for a product.
5.Use a ……… to show the relationship between various departments in an organization.
Task 25. What is important when presenting visuals? Which opinion(s) do you agree with?
Karen Hamilton, Marketing Manager
I think to be effective a good visual must focus on only a few points. It’s important not to have too much information on one slide or transparency. Slide overload is bad because people will then spend time reading the slide rather than listening to the presenter. I normally use bullet points to structure information – I never write complete sentences. Headlines are important too.
Keith Sallis, Real Estate Manager
In my opinion the presenter is the focus of the presentation – not the visuals. The key purpose for using a visual aid is to help the audience understand the topic better. So the visuals should only be used to support the presenter’s message. A process-flow chart slide, for example, helps people understand visually what you are describing verbally. If a visual distracts the audience’s attention from what you’re saying, it’s useless.
Susan Liu, Export Manager
Above all, a slide or an overhead must be readable. If the audience can’t read the slide, they will soon give up. That’s why font size is very important. It should be as large as possible, I’d say at least 24. And sometimes it’s also a good idea to use different colours to highlight some points. Using many different colours can be confusing though.

Barbara James, Market Researcher
What you say and what you show should always go together l00%. So when you’re not talking about the slide, it shouldn’t be visible. I always switch off the display when I’m talking about something that has nothing to do with the slide. If people are busy looking at the slide, they aren’t listening to what you’re saying. It’s better to use the B-key to return to a black screen or replace the slide with some form of ‘wallpaper’ such as a company logo.
Javier Sanchez, Financial Analyst
For me it’s very important that the presenter speaks to the audience and doesn’t read to them! The speaker must make eyecontact and not watch the monitor or screen while he or she is talking. I think it’s extremely boring when someone just reads slides word for word as if it were an essay or something.
Tony Benetti, Media Consultant
It’s called ‘Death by PowerPoint’ when people use so many sound effects and animations that the audience’s attention is completely taken away from the delivery of the message. I think PowerPoint is a fantastic tool, but just because it has so many effects you don’t have to use them all. Overuse is overkill here.
Task 26. Answer the questions:
1.What kinds of tools and visuals do you normally use in your presentations?
2.What tips can you think of for using visuals effectively?
Supplementary Task:
Turn to the famous speech ‘Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish’ Steve Jobs delivered to the graduates of Stanford University. Watch the video again, if necessary. Read the analysis in the SUPPLENENT.
Share your thoughts on this presentation. What did you like? What could have been done better?

UNIT I. ACADEMIC SYSTEM: HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM, MOTIVATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Text 1.
Bachelor’s degree:
Bachelor of Science, сокр. B.Sc./B.S. A.B./B.A. (гуманитарные науки) Bachelor of Fine Arts, сокр. B.F.A.
Bachelor of Business Administration, сокр. B.B.A.
I got my first degree in physics and then I switched over to the field of chemistry.
Master of Science, сокр. M.S. Master of Arts, сокр. M.A. Master of Fine Arts, сокр. M.F.A.

I have a master’s degree in physics.
I left England to go to the USA to be a student of advanced mathematics. In the USA I earned the degree of Master of Science and also Doctor of Philosophy.
I studied at a college in California for my bachelor’s degree and my master’s degree. Then I got my doctoral degree at the University.
I am twenty-six years old and have just completed my master’s degree in science. And I’m going to begin my Ph. D. program next September in the USA.
After graduation from the University I received a higher degree in mathematics at Florida University.

I have graduate degrees from the American University and the University of Miami in Florida.
I got my doctorate in economics two years ago.
Сочетания типа candidate’s degree/candidate of sciences или candidate of chemistry/candidate of chemical science(s)
– Now I am a doctoral candidate in mathematics.

Lett.D.
Doctor of Science/Doctor of the Sciences/Doctor of History/ Doctor of Technical science(s)
The Russian Doctor of Science degree is the highest research degree in this country. Many scientists having that degree are professors.
Doctor of Medicine, сокр. M.D. (медицина) Juris Doctor, сокр. J.D.

I have a degree which we call Doctor of Medical Science degree. It is our senior research doctoral degree in this field.
•использовать эквиваленты;
Text 2. MASTER’S DEGREE
Titles
Master’s degrees are commonly titled using the form ‘Master of ...’, where either a faculty (typically Arts or Science) or a field (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Business Administration, etc.) is specified. The two most common titles of master’s degrees are the Master of Arts (MA/M.A./A.M) and Master of Science (MSc/M.S./S.M.) degrees; which normally consist of a mixture of research and taught material. Integrated master’s degrees and postgraduate master’s degrees oriented towards professional practice are often more specifically named for their field of study (“tagged degrees”), including, for example, the Master of Business Administration, Master of Divinity, Master of Engineering and Master of Physics. A few titles are more general, for example Master of Philosophy (MPhil), used (in the same manner as Doctor of Philosophy) to indicate degrees with a large research component [8], Master of Studies (MSt)/Master of Advanced Study (MASt)/Master of Advanced Studies (M.A.S.), and Professional Master’s (MProf).
The form “Master in …” is also sometimes used, particularly where a faculty title is used for an integrated master’s in addition to its use in a traditional postgraduate master’s, e.g. Master in

Science (MSci) and Master in Arts (MArts). This form is also sometimes used with other integrated master’s degrees, and occasionally for postgraduate master’s degrees (e.g. Master’s in Accounting). Some universities use Latin degree names; because of the flexibility of syntax in Latin, the Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees may be known in these institutions as Magister artium and Magister sciences or reversed from the English order to Artium magister and Sciences magister. Examples of the reversed usage include Harvard University, the University of Chicago and MIT, leading to the abbreviations A.M. and S.M. for these degrees. The forms “Master of Science” and “Master in Science” are indistinguishable in Latin, thus MSci is “Master of Natural Sciences” at the University of Cambridge.
In the UK, fullstops (periods) are not used in degree abbreviations. In the US, The Gregg Reference Manual recommends placing periods in degrees (e.g. B.S., Ph.D.), however The Chicago Manual of Style recommends writing degrees without periods (e.g. BS, PhD).
Master of Science is generally abbreviated M.S. or MS in countries following United States usage and MSc in countries following British usage, where MS would refer to the degree of Master of Surgery. In Australia, some extended master’s degrees use the title “doctor”: Juris doctor and Doctors of Medical Practice, Physiotherapy, Dentistry, Optometry and Veterinary Practice. Despite their titles these are still master’s degree and may not be referred to as doctoral degrees, nor may graduates use the title “doctor”.
Types
Postgraduate/Graduate Master’s Degrees
(MA/M.A./A.M., MSc/M.S./SM, MBA/M.B.A., MSt, LLM/ LL.M., etc.) are the traditional formal form of master’s degree, where the student already holds an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree on entry. Courses normally last one year in the UK and two years in the US.
Integrated Master’s Degrees
(MChem, MEng, MMath, MPharm, MPhys, MPsych, MSci, etc.) are UK degrees that combine an undergraduate bachelor’s degree course with an extra year at master’s level (i.e. a total of

four yearsin England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and five years in Scotland). A 2011 survey of UK Higher Education Institutes found that 64% offered integrated master’s course, mostly in STEM disciplines, with the most common degrees being MEng, MSci and MChem. 82% of respondents conferred only a master’s degree for the course, while 9% conferred a bachelor’s degree at the end of the bachelor’s-level stage and a master’s degree at the end of the course and a further 9% conferred both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the end of the course.
Non-Master’s Level Master’s Degrees
The ancient universities of the UK and Ireland have traditionally awarded MAs in a different manner to that usual today. The Scottish MA is a bachelor’s-level qualification offered by the ancient universities of Scotland. The Oxbridge MA is not an academic qualification; it is granted without further examination to those who have gained a BA from Oxford or Ca mbridge Universities in England, and the MA of Trinity College Dublin in Ireland is granted to its graduates in a similar manner.
The UK Quality Assurance Agency Defines
Three Categories of Master’s Degrees
•Research master’s degrees are primarily research based, although may contain taught elements, particularly on research methods. Examples are the MPhil (always a research degree, often linked to a doctoral programme), MLitt (usually, but not always a research degree) and Master’s by Research. They aim to prepare students for research careers. Care should be taken not to confuse the Master by Research (MbyRes, ResM or MPhil), which is a research degree more aligned to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in a specific subject, with the Master of Research (MRes), which is a taught degree concentrating on research methods.
•Specialised or advanced study master’s degrees are primarily taught degrees, although commonly at least a third of the course is devoted to a research project assessed by dissertation. These may be stand-alone master’s courses, leading to, e.g., MSc, MA or MRes degrees, or integrated master’s degrees.
•Professional or practice master’s degrees (see also professional degree) are designed to prepare students for a particular professional career and are primarily taught, although they may
