Герундий переводится на русский язык различными способами, а именно:
Именем существительным.
We were counting on your being present. Мы рассчитывали на ваше присутствие.
Инфинитивом.
She is afraid of bathing there. Она боится купаться там.
Деепричастием.
He went away without leaving his address. Он уехал, не оставив своего адреса.
Глаголом в личной форме. В этом случае герундий с относящимися к нему словами переводится на русский язык придаточным предложением.
She reproached herself for having said it.
Она упрекала себя за то, что сказала это.

Exercise 1. Translate into Russian paying special attention to the gerund.
1. Could you please stop making so much noise? 2. I don’t enjoy writing letters. 3. If you walk into the road without looking you risk being knocked down by the car. 4. The batteries of this radio need changing. 5. Do you think the grass needs cutting? 6. Before going out I phoned Ann. 7. Tom left without finishing the dinner. 8. Exercise 2. Open the brackets using the correct form of the gerund.
1. The machine needs (to clean). 2. I am quite serious in (to say) that I don’t want to go abroad. 3. He seemed sorry for (to be) inattentive to his child. 4. The old man couldn’t stand (to tell) what he should do. 5. Going to the party was no use: he had no talent for (to dance). 6. The Bronze Horseman was worth (to see). 7. After thoroughly (to examine) the student the professor gave him a satisfactory mark. 8. After thoroughly (to examine) by the examination commission, the student was given a satisfactory mark. 9. The girls were busy (to pack) when one of them suddenly remembered (to leave) the milk on the stove. 10. The girl was proud of (to choose) to represent the sportsmen of the school at the coming competition. She thanked her classmates for (to choose) her and promised to do her best to win.
. Exercise 3. Insert the appropriate prepositions where it is necessary.

What are your reasons to accuse her … taking the papers? 10. Everything depends … being on the spot.
Exercise 4. Replace the subordinate clauses with the gerund, using the prepositions given in brackets.
1. When they entered the house, they heard the last bell ringing. (on) 2. Thank you that you invited me to the theatre. (for) 3. The woman insisted that her husband should consult the doctor at once. (on) 4. She couldn’t even think that the operation might be postponed. (of) 5. There was little hope that James would return on the same day. (of) 6. The pleasant-faced middle-aged woman insisted that Olga should come to her town to teach. (on). 7. There is a possibility that my father will join us for the trip. (of). I don’t mind if you walk to the underground station with me.

Exercise 6. Translate into English using the gerund.
1. Перестань бегать. 2. Он отрицал, что взял деньги. 3. Она не одобряла того, что он слишком часто ходил на вечеринки. 4. Он думает, что ты не написал ему письмо. 5. Мама возражает против того, что он часто ходит в кино. 6. Я не могу не сердиться на него. 7. Вы не возражаете, если я приведу моего друга? 8. Я настаиваю на том, чтобы спросить его совета. 9.
