LESSON 5

 Text of conversation

Harry: Do you want me to do anything this evening, Nora?

Nora: I don't think so.

Harry: You're sure there's nobody coming to see us?

Nora: No, I don't think there is.

Harry: And there's nothing you want me to listen to on the wireless?

Nora: I'm sure there isn't.

Harry: Then will it be right for me to go round to the club?

Nora: Oh yes, I should think so.

Harry: It's a long time since I went.

Nora: I suppose it is.

Harry: It's a long time since I went.

Nora: I suppose it is.

Harry: The chaps are wondering what's happened to me.

Nora: I suppose they must be.

Harry: I'd like a game of billiards with the chaps.

Nora: I expect you would.

Harry: I'm fond of billiards.

Nora: Yes, I know you are.

Harry: I get out of practice if I stay away too long.

Nora: I daresay you do.

Harry: Besides, didn't Bennett telephone last week and ask me to have a game?

Nora: Now you mention it, I believe he did.

Harry: So you won't mind if I go off just for this evening, will you?

Nora: Of course I won't.

Harry: I'll go up and change.

Nara: Yes, do. Only -

Harry: Only what?

Nora: Well, Harry, don't you remember that today's the anniversary of our wedding day?

Harry: Good heavens, so it is!

Nora: And you promised we should always keep it.

Harry: So I did!

Nora: You know, Harry, there's a dance this evening at the Town Hall.

Harry: So there is!

Nora: So do you still think you'll go round to the club?

Harry: No - somehow I don't think I will.

LESSON 6

 Text of conversation

Nora: What are you going to do on this beautiful warm Sunday, Harry?

Harry: I think I shall do a bit of gardening. Will you help me, Nora?

Nora: Of course I will. Shall I put on my gardening boots?

Harry: Yes, do - and so will I. I'm going to dig up that dead tree at the bottom of the garden.

Nora: Shall I be able to help you?

Harry: No, I don't think you will. You can be cutting off the tops of the dead flowers, they make the garden look so untidy. And all those flowers by the wall you can pull up by the roots. We want the ground to be quite clear before the winter. You will see when I have finished - or I'll see when you have - and then we'll think of something we can do together.

Nora: Oh, Harry - will you please paint the roof of the shed? That really does make the garden look untidy.

Harry: It shall be painted! - but not till next weekend.

Nora: And you shall have a glass of beer when the tree is dug up. I'll bring it out to you.

Harry: That'll be very nice - I shall certainly be ready for it.

Nora: Are you going to water those new fruit-trees?

Harry: No, I shan't do that, because I think it will rain tomorrow. But I'm going to cut the grass.

Nora: I'll cut it if you like.

Harry: No, you just clear the flower-beds and then we'll see. Now, what tools shall we need?

Nora: You will want the spade and fork, and I shall want the trowel.

Harry: I say, how black those clouds are getting. I think it's going to rain.

Nora: Then we shall have to put off our gardening until this afternoon.

Harry: I hope I can still have my glass of beer!
