Додаток 5 “One” and “Ones” in Place of Countable Nouns
An
adjective can’t be used on its own in place of a singular
countable noun. We must use a noun after an adjective or we must use
one to
avoid repeating the noun:
e.g. Don’t use that cloth. Usethiscleanone.
(Не використовуй ту скатертину.
Візьми оцю чисту.
The form “ones” is used
to avoid repeating a plural countable noun.
e.g. I don’t want to wear my old shoes. I want
to wear my new ones.
(Я не хочу
взувати свої старі черевики. Я хочу
взути нові.)
“One” and “ones” are used for
people as well as things.
e.g. Do you know John Smith? – Is he the one
who phoned last night?
(Це той, хто
дзвонив минулого вечора?)
Do you know this book?
– Is it the one
you bought last Sunday?
(Це ту, що ти
купив минулої неділі?)
“One” can’t be used
in place of an uncountable noun. We repeat the noun or use no noun
at all.
e.g.
Don’t use that milk. Use this fresh milk. Or: Use this fresh.
(Не пий те
молоко. Візьми це свіже молоко. Або:
Візьми це свіже).

The pericardium secrets a
fluid reducing friction as the heart beats.
The adult heart is about the
size of a fist.
The heart is divided by the
septum in two parts.
In the left chamber the atrium
and the ventricle are separated by the mitral valve.
