Business exercises (in-tray)*
Some problems have to be solved and decisions made by an individual working on his own. One exercise which deals with this is the in-tray. It simulates the working situation by

presenting trainees with a number of items such as letters, memos, reports, similar to those which arrive on their own desks. They must deal with these by writing down whatever actions they think appropriate in the circumstances described in the exercise. The results of their efforts are analysed and discussed on the basis of the decisions made.
This exercise can be used to develop skill in problem-solving; planning use of time; establishing work priorities; written communication; etc.
It can be ran in a variety of ways and the time required will vary accordingly. If it is run as a problem-solving exercise it can take several hours; but if it deals with only one aspect it can be done in about an hour.
Like all business games and exercises, it can provide realistic experience of the techniques and skills of the job. However, this benefit is realised only if the exercise material selected is relevant to the needs of trainees.
