The english language Purposes of Learning English

• Today, when English is one of the major languages in the world, it requires an effort of the imagination to realize that this is a relatively recent thing. In Shakespeare’s time only a few million people spoke English. And also the language was not thought to be very important by the other nations of Europe and was unknown to the rest of the world. English has become a world language because of its establishment as a mother tongue outside England in all the continents of the world.

People who speak English fall into one of three groups: those who have learned it as their native language; those who have learned it as a second language, and those who are forced to use it for practical purposes. Nowadays, there are a lot of interlocking reasons for the popularity of English as a lingua franca. Many of these reasons are historical, but they also include economic and cultural factors which have influenced and sustained the spread of English.

A major factor of spreading of English has been the spreading of commerce throughout the world.

• Much travel and tourism is carried on, around the world, in English. Of course, this is not the case that many tourism workers demonstrate the multilingualism in different countries. Any visit to most airports on the globe will show signs not only in the language of that country but also in English, just as many airlines announcements are glossed.

A great deal of academic discourse around the world takes place in English. It is often a lingua franca of conferences, for example, and many journal articles in fields as diverse as astrophysics and zoology have English as a kind of default language. The first years of the Internet as a major channel for information exchange have also seen a marked predominance of English. This probably has something to do with the Internet’s roots in the USA and the predominance of its use there in the early days of the World Wide Web.

• In the western world, at least, English is a dominating language in popular culture. Pop music in English saturates the planet’s airwaves. Thus many people who are not English speakers can sing words from their favorite English medium songs. Many people who are regular cinemagoers (or TV viewers) frequently hear English in subtitled films coming out of the USA.

• Geographically, English is the most widespread language on the Earth, second only to Mandarin Chinese in the number of people who speak it. It is not necessary that English will remain dominant among world languages. However, there is no doubt that it is and it will remain a vital linguistic tool for many business people, academicians, tourists and citizens of the world who wish to communicate easily across nationalities for many years to come.

British English vs American English

British and American English are two main variants of English. Besides them there are: Canadian, Australian, Indian, New Zealand and other variants. They have some peculiarities in pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, but they are easily used for communication between people living in these countries. 

American English begins its history at the beginning of the 17-th century when first English-speaking settlers began to settle on the Atlantic coast of the American continent. The language which they brought from England was the language spoken in England during the reign of Elizabeth the First.

In the earliest period the task of Englishmen was to find names for places, animals, plants, customs that they came across on the American continent. They took some of names from languages spoken by the local population - Indians, such as: “chipmuck” /an American squirrel/, «igloo»  /Eskimo dome-shaped hut/, «skunk» /a black and white striped animal with a bushy tail/, «squaw» /an Indian woman/, «wigwam» /an American Indian tent made of skins and bark/ etc.

Besides Englishmen, settlers from other countries came to America, and English-speaking settlers mixed with them and borrowed some words from their languages, e.g. from French the words «bureau» /a writing desk/, «cache» /a hiding place for treasure, provision/, «depot» /a store-house/, «pumpkin» /a plant bearing large edible fruit/. From Spanish such words as: «adobe» /unburnt sun-dried brick/, «bananza» /prosperity/, «cockroach» /a beetle-like insect/, «lasso» /a noosed rope for catching cattle/ were borrowed.

Present-day New York stems from the Dutch colony New Amsterdam, and Dutch also influenced English. Such words as: «boss», «dope», «sleigh» were borrowed.

The second period of American English history begins in the 19-th century. Immigrants continued to come from Europe to America. When large groups of immigrants from the same country came to America some of their words were borrowed into English. Italians brought with them a style of cooking, which became widely spread and such words as: «pizza», «spaghetti» came into English. From the great number of German-speaking settlers the following words were borrowed into English: «delicatessen», «hamburger», «noodle», «schnitzel» and many others.

There are some differences between British and American English in the usage of prepositions, such as prepositions with dates, days of the week BrE requires «on» /I start my holiday on Friday/, in American English there is no preposition /I start my vacation Friday/. In BrE we use «by day», «by night»/«at night», in AmE the corresponding forms are «days» and «nights».  In BrE we say «at home», in AmE - «home» is used. In BrE we say «a quarter to five», in AmE «a quarter of five».  In BrE we say «in the street», in AmE - «on the street». In BrE we say, «to chat to somebody», in AmE «to chat with somebody». In BrE we say «different to something», in AmE - «different from something». There are also units of vocabulary which are different while denoting the same notions, e.g. BrE - «trousers», AmE - «pants»; while in BrE «pants» are underwear which in AmE is «shorts». And in BrE «shorts» are outwear. This can lead to misunderstanding.

Differences in the organization of education lead to different terms. BrE «public school» is in fact a private school. It is a fee-paying school not controlled by the local education authorities. AmE «public school» is a free local authority school. BrE «elementary school» is AmE «grade school» BrE «secondary school» is AmE «high school». In BrE «a pupil leaves a secondary school», in AmE «a student graduates from a high school». In BrE you can only graduate from a university or college of education, graduating entails getting a degree. A British university student takes three years known as the first, the second and the third years. An American student takes four years, known as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years.
