I. Инфинитив выполняет следующие функции:

1. Подлежащего. It was hard to remember his face.

2. Дополнения. He finds it easy to understand spoken English.

3. Определения. She was the first to come. There is nothing to speak about.

4. Обстоятельства цели. I was on my way to the club(in order, so that) to look for you.

5. Обстоятельства степени. Lanny was too weak to move. I was grown up enough to understand it.

6. Обстоятельства сравнения. She touched his shoulder as if (as though) to stop him.

7. Сопутствующего обстоятельства. He went into the street to find himself alone.

8. Части сказуемого. She is easy to deal with. She began to work as a teacher last year.

9. Вводного члена предложения. It was awfully cold, to be sure.

II. Infinitive without “to”.

1. После вспомогательных глаголов

2. Поле модальных глаголов (can, may, must, will, need, dare), кроме ought to, have to, be to. I must go now. You can stay here. I have to work hard.

3. После глаголов let (позволять), make (заставлять). She doesn’t let me watch TV. My mother makes me go shopping.

4. После сочетаний had better, would rather (только с I), would sooner, cannot but, could do nothing but.

Examples: You had better go to the doctor. – Тебе бы лучше пойти ко врачу.

I would rather go to the doctor. – Мне бы лучше пойти ко врачу.

She would sooner do her homework. – Ей бы следует сделать домашнюю работу.

He cannot but attend the seminar. – Ему необходимо посетить этот семинар.

They could do nothing but return home. – Им ничего не остается сделать, как вернуться домой.

5. После глаголов чувственного восприятия: to see, to hear, to feel, to watch, to notice, to know.

I didn’t see you come in. – Я не видел как ты вошел.

6. В вопросе, начинающемся с why not. Why not go to the club? – Почему бы не пойти в клуб?

III. The Objective with the Infinitive (Complex Object).

1. после глаголов чувственного восприятия (инфинитив без «to»): see, hear, feel, watch, perceive, notice, observe. I saw him cross the street. – Я видел как он пересекал улицу.

2. после глаголов, выражающих желания, чувства и намерения (инфинитив с частичкой «to»): want, wish, like, hate, desire, intend. He wants me to come on Sunday. – Он хочет, чтобы я пришел в Воскресенье.

3. после глаголов умственной деятельности (инфинитив с частицей «to»): know, believe, think, consider, expect. We believed him to finish the work in 2 days. – мы думаем, что он закончит работу через 2 дня.

4. после глаголов речи (инфинитив с частицей «to»): tell, ask, order, command, allow. The mother asked me to wash up. – Моя мама попросила меня вымыть посуду.

5. после глаголов, выражающих побуждение к действию (инфинитив без частицы «to»): let, make, have, get (to). She made me drink some milk. – Она заставила меня выпить молоко.

IV. Subjective Infinitive.

After the verbs: say, report, announce, know, believe, think, find, hear, see, make, happen, seem, appear, prove, turn out, sure, likely, certain, unlikely.

Examples: He is supposed to come back. – Предполагается, что он вернется.

He seems to know the man. – Кажется, он знает мужчину.

She is sure to come. – Он обязательно придет.

V. “For” Construction.

Examples: It is necessary for him to finish the work. – Ему необходимо закончить работу.

The people waited patiently for the king to appear on the balcony. – Люди ждали терпеливо, когда король появиться на балконе.

I’ll make a new dress for you to wear at the ball. – Я сделаю тебе новое платье, чтобы ты его одела на бал.
