Auto service specialists test, maintain, service and repair different models of cars.

They can work in automotive service centres or run their own business.

Vehicles are made of metals and alloys of metals. Any auto service specialist must know the existing metals and their alloys, their physical and chemical properties. Metals may be light (aluminum), heavy (iron, copper), hard (iron) or soft (lead)-. Cast iron, steel and bronze are the most important alloys.

No vehicle will operate without a good engine. The engine is the main part of any machine. An engineer who is to work with machines must know different types of engines, their parts and principles of their work. Diesel engines, for example, are used in locomotives, trucks and tractors. Gasoline engines are used in airplanes and automo­biles. Diesel engines as well as gasoline ones are the internal combustion engine. They operate on liquid fuel. The fuel is burnt inside their cylinders. The working cycle of the internal combustion engines has four strokes:

6. a compression stroke (the piston moves up)

7. a power stroke (the piston moves down)

8. an exhaust stroke (the piston moves down).

BACHELORS OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY

The bachelors of the Chemical Technology work as engineers, research workers at different chemical plants, pulp and paper mills, research institutes and chemical laboratories. Chemists study natural substances, investigate their structure, properties, and reactions that change these substances into other materials. They experiment with different substances and create new ones. The well-known man-made materials are polymers, plastics, synthetic fibers and others. These materials possess various important properties and are able to withstand high temperatures. Working at cellulose and paper mills our chemists produce cellulose, paper, insulating materials, fibreboards and other products.

Wood is widely used by chemists in the production of different kinds of products. Paper is also a product of chemical processing of wood.

Chemists work out new methods of treating wood with preservatives which protect it from decay and wood-destroying organisms. Destructive distillation and hydrolysis of wood give such products as charcoal, sugar, furfural, acetone, ethyl alcohol and many others.
