The Academy of science was founded in ST Petersburg by Peter the Great.

This was the time when science was gaining ground and the time when life itself demanded closer contacts between science and practice.

The developing industry, transport and trade needed scientific support to facilitate the state to gain ground.

The transformations, initiated by Peter the Great in the first quarter of 18^th century were of progressive importance. They gave rise to the Russian national culture.

The first collection PtG acquired was the basis of Cabinet of Curiosities, which is for-father for all our museums.

It was already at the close of the 17^th century when a thought occurred to PtG about the creation of AoS, a University and grammar school.

In 1721 The court librarian Schumacher was sent on a mission abroad.

He was instructed to select a scientific staff for the organization of sciences like in Europe.

The Problem of the foundation of the AoS was discussed at the meeting of the Senate /on the 22^nd of January/ attended by major state figures.

His Imperial Majesty ordered that an academy should be established, in which languages will be studied as well as other sciences /and the best arts and books will be translated.

The Academy was called in a different way during many years and since December 1991 it has been called the Russian AoS.
