I am a second-year student at Sussex University. Unfortunately I failed some of my exams this year, but I can take them again in the autumn. I sometimes get up a bit late, but I’m very nice and friendly. I am good at working with people and I enjoy travelling. I can speak French q ravelersand I can speak a little Spanish. THE TRUTH ABOUT ELECTRONIC MAIL

The advantage of normal letters is that people know when to _____ the correspondence. For example, A _____ to B with a request for information. B replies. A writes back to B to say thank you. End of story.

Nowadays we use electronic mail. The problem with the mail is that it is too fast and too easy. The communication never ends. You arrive at your office and _______ on your computer. You _______ 40 new e-mails. You start replying to them. Other people ______

your answers and reply to them. By the time you are ready to send off your last reply, there are another 40 e-mails to read and reply to. It never stops.

The problem is this. People think that you need to _______ to all e-mails in the same way that you _______ all phone calls. Probably around 90 per cent of e-mails are unnecessary. Electronic mail is a wonderful invention, but in fact it means you never

_______ any work. It’s impossible with so many e-mails to answer!

__ That’s not too bad. How often do you write normal letters these days? __ Yes, me too. How much do you use the phone?

UNIT 4

EATING OUT

1. Read the text.

MEALS IN BRITAIN

A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal – sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms. But nowadays many people just have cereal with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam, or honey. Marmalade and jam are not the same! Marmalade is made from oranges and jam is made from other fruit. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people have with cold milk. Some people have coffee, often instant coffee, which is made with just hot water. Many visitors to Britain find this coffee disgusting!

For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich bars, where office workers can choose the kind of bread they want - brown, white, or a roll, and t–en all sorts of salad and meat or fish to go in the sandwich. Pubs often serve good, cheap food, both hot and cold.

“Tea” means two things. It is a drink and a meal! Some people have afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, and, of course, a cup of tea.

The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people. They usually have it quite early, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and often the whole family eats together.

On Sundays many families have a traditional lunch. They have roast meat, either beef, lamb, chicken, or pork, with potatoes, vegetables, and gravy. Gravy is a sauce made from the meat juices. The British like food from other countries, too, especially Italian, French, Chinese, and Indian. People often get take-away meals - you buy the food at the restaurant and then bring it home to eat. Eating in Britain is quite international!
