Grades in American Colleges and Universities
While the quantity (1) __ a student’s academic work is measured (2) __ credits or units, its quality is evaluated (3) __ grades. In the USA there are four passing grades “A”, “B”, “C” and “D” and shades (4) __ between. There is usually one failing grade: “F”. If a student receives an “F” (5) __ a class, he will not be awarded credit toward a degree for that class. If the class is required (6) __ the completion of the degree, the student must repeat the class and earn a passing grade. “Incomplete” (“Inc.” or “I”) indicates that work (7) __ the course has not been completed due (8) __ circumstances that the professor understands and accepts. If the work remains unfinished (9) __ a specified period (10) __ time (usually, the next term), the grade will then be changed (11) __ “F”.
Some courses may be offered (12) __ a “pass / fail” basis. This means that no letter grade is given. Work is judged to be either satisfactory and credit is given, or unsatisfactory and no credit is given (13) __ the class.
(14) __ the end of a term, each professor will evaluate the student’s performance and test results to determine a grade for the course. (15) __ most US universities and colleges a letter grade is given (16) __ a numerical equivalent. This number will be used, along with other grades, to determine the student’s Grade Point Average. Students in the United States work very hard to maintain an above-average GPA. (17) __ many cases, they will be asked to supply GPA information (18) potential employers (19) __ graduation. Graduate schools will also use the students’ GPAs when they consider candidates (20) __ a graduate degree program.
Task XI. Translate into English the sentences that follow:
Task XII. Give a brief comparative summary of the educational systems of the UK and the USA.
C. Follow-up Activities
Task XIII. Act out the following situations:
You are discussing the reasons for and the possibility of changing your major with your academic faculty adviser.
A Belarusian (Russian) student exchanges information about admission procedures in Belarusian (Russian) and American universities with his American friend.
Suppose you have got an opportunity to study abroad. You have to choose between an American university and a British one. What will your choice be? Share your views with the class.
Task XIV. Make up a list of questions to ask at the admission interview. Role-play the interview with your groupmates.
For example:
How have you prepared yourself to study in the States?
How well can you speak, read and write the English language? Have you taken an English proficiency test?
What particular academic field do you want to pursue?
What are your financial resources?
Then act out the part of the interview where the interviewee is invited to ask questions.
