Listening 6 (a2-b1) when a child is born
When a Child Is Born is a popular Christmas song. The original melody was Soleado , a tune from 1972 by Ciro Dammicco, composer for Italy's Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble and Dario Baldan Bembo. Fred Jay wrote the English language lyrics a few years later. They do not make specific mention of Christmas but the importance they attach to looking forward to the birth of one particular child somewhere, anywhere, suggests a reference to the birth of Jesus Christ, and the mentioning of "a tiny star" that "lights up way up high" may allude to the Star of Bethlehem.
Listen to When a Child is Born sung by Michael Ball and Claire Moore (video 13 – 03.35 min.) and complete the gaps. Working in pairs, compare the answers. If necessary, listen to the song again to check the answers.

LISTENING 7 (B1-B1+) WEIRD JINGLING BELLS
Christmas is mostly about celebrations, gift giving, merry-making and church attending. There are so many different elements that contribute to the celebration that we have come to know as Christmas: tucking into the Christmas feast of yummy pudding and turkey, hanging up socks and leaving out cookies and milk for Santa, opening presents under the Christmas trees, and having a great time with family and friends. At least, that is what the common notion of Christmas is to most of us. However, in some parts of the world, you may find strange and bizarre traditions and customs that would raise an eyebrow or two. Do you know any of them?
You will watch a five-fact video segment on weird Christmas traditions in 5 countries. Watch the video segment (video 14 – 02.40 min.) and complete the table. Working with a partner, compare the answers. If necessary, watch the segment again. Then discuss the answers with the class.

Coward, Sir Noel (b. Dec.16, 1899, Teddington, near London – d. March, Jamaica). Playwright, actor, and composer whose highly polished comedies of manners continued the same English stage tradition developed by William Congreve and Oscar Wilde. He caught in his work the clipped speech and brittle life-style of the generation that emerged from World War I. His songs struck the world-weary note of his times. He signs in a quavering but superbly timed and articulate baritone.
ii The Stereotypes Song (script)
You know, I always thought stereotypes were kinda ridiculous. So I wrote a song about it, And it goes a little something like this. I think I love you more than the Japanese love tentacle porn, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Let's come together and live in this world like a unibrow on an Indian girl, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Check it out now. I love those fat Americans. You know they so obnoxious (беспардонный, наглый) They always eating burgers. They always holding shotguns. And I love Mexicans. The way they mow my lawn. They all got a 100 kids 'cause they don't know how to put a condom on. Uh huh. 'Cause that's the way they roll. Ya gotta go big like an Israeli nose. If you ever buy a pint for an Irish guy, And they're out of control like a Chinese driver. I love the Middle East, but how do they handle Rockin' burkas while they're riding camels. I love Jamaicans. Yeah, they cool, but they're always high, so don't let them fool ya. Ya mon. And I love them Puerto Ricans, Even though they wash their ass about once a week and, I'm just joking. If you didn't know then You're a little slow and you're probably from Poland. I think I love you more than the Japanese love tentacle porn, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Let's come together and live in this world like a unibrow on an Indian girl, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Aw yeah! Let me hear you yell If you love the Outback redneck Australians, And the crooked ass teeth of an English dude (житель большого города) And those creepy (гадкий, омерзительный) Italians who think they're smooth. Mamma mia! And how could anyone hate the French. Yeah, I know their hairy women don't shave their pits. Brazilian girls is what you want, Walking around town with that ba-dunk-a-dunk (большая попа). I love Africans, but hold up a second. National Geographic says they're all butt-nekkid (голая задница). Breasts hanging low. What have they done with their clothes? They've disappeared like coke up a Colombian's nose. Uh oh! You're all on my checklist, Even Russian guys who drink Vodka for breakfast. They're stereotypes, and if you believe them, Then your brain is small like a Korean penis. I think I love you more than the Japanese love tentacle porn, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Let's come together and live in this world like a unibrow on an Indian girl, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. All together now! I love Scotsmen, though they hump (портить настроение) sheep. [repeat 4x] They hump sheep [repeat 3x] I think I love you more than the Japanese love tentacle porn, And we should dance dance dance d-d-dance to these stereotypes. Let's come together and live in this world like a unibrow on an Indian girl, And we should dance dance dance dance dance to these stereotypes. Yeah. I'm just playing, you know I love you guys. But seriously, don't hump any sheep.
iii A very firm and simple idea about what a particular type of person or thing is like.
iv Cognitive shortcuts («оперативные или быстрые клавиши» в сознании, «пиктограммы быстрого доступа», выводы, сделанные минуя стадии изучения и анализа) are leapfrogs over study and analysis to reach a conclusion without going through those intermediary steps. The most common type of shortcut is group identification. If you place yourself within a group political, religious, ideological, etc – and you are confronted by an issue you do not understand, the default response is to accept whatever the position of that group is and to presume that it must be correct even though you have not taken the time to do any study that would justify that conclusion. Repercussion – consequences (отголосок, последствия, отклик) Mitigate – minimize, make less severe (отголосок, последствия, отклик) Play out – develop, happen (разворачиваться, развиваться, проходить)
