Lesson 7 my future profession

1. Read and translate the text given below.

There are a lot of interesting and useful professions and it’s not an easy task to choose the right one. As is known Russia is passing through a difficult stage now. The state of our economy lives much to be desired at present. Of course, changes are taking place in our life, but the process is very slow and painful.

Lots of young people want to be part of this improvement. So my choice is the study of economics. Our university offers several specialties: one major in banking, management and programming. As to me, I’m a second year student of the management department. In a small firm it is quite likely that one person will carry out all the management duties. When a firm grows to a level where it needs a formal organization structure it will also need managers to carry out management functions.

Managers are the intermediate layer in a company's structure. They are responsible to the directors and owners of the firm and have responsibilities for the levels and employees below them. Management is the art of managing - setting targets, making decisions, delegating authority, and motivating employees. This means that, 'to a firm, managers are responsible, salaried, trustworthy, motivated decision makers.

Managers will be paid an annual salary by the firm, they will not be paid overtime and will often be expected to work longer hours than other employees.

The functions of managers are numerous. For example, the directors have made a certain decision. The job of the management is to look at the general target and decide on a strategy that will achieve it. This strategy needs to be communicated to subordinates who will be given particular jobs to do - that is they must be organized and responsibility must be delegated. Management must then coordinate and control the process. Managers must be prepared to motivate staff, give praise and encouragement for job well done, reprimands where there is inefficiency or laziness. Finally it is their job to report back to the directors of the organization.
