A Talented Russian Architect

Aleksei Viktorovich Shusev is a brilliant, recognized master of architecture. He designed and built his remarkable buildings in Moscow. Shusev is the author of 150 architectural designs. His name has gone done in the history of architecture alongside the names of such talented Russian architects as V. Kazakov and V. Bazhenov.

One of A. V. Shusev’s first designs was that of the Kazan Terminal in Moscow. The composition of the terminal is quite interesting. The architect joined several separate pavilions into one building and subordinated them to the clear-cut vertical lines of the main tower. He also used forms taken from 17^th century Russian national architecture to join the pavilions of the terminal.

The exterior of the terminal is gorgeous. Everyone who comes to Moscow admires its beauty and originality. It doesn’t look featureless and monotonous. The architect designed the interiors of the terminal in the Russian national style. Here one can see the cubic space of the waiting halls, the mighty arch lines, and the peculiar shape of the window openings.

A characteristic trend in Shusev’s creative work as an architect is his ability to make full use of national motifs. Russian architects especially liked his bold use of red bricks and white stones as building materials.

V. Shusev received wide public recognition for his outstanding town-building ensembles and separate constructions. The architect created a great number of drawings and paintings. He also published approximately 170 scientific papers. His serious research in the field of the theory of architecture contributed much to the development of architectural creation in Russia in the 20^th century.
